Java moss

WOW! I went to the LFS today and it was 8.99 for a clump of java moss smaller then a golf ball, so I didn't get any. Is it normally that high priced?

One of our local pet stores sells it at, and I kid you not, $199.00 per pound. Now I don't know how much moss you'd get for a pound..but jeez! It is expensive around here.

Look in the "Take a Plant, Leave a Plant" post in the classifieds, you can generally get it for shipping from someone. As for how it is used:

Spread it out and weight it down with a little gravel for instant carpet.

Tie it to driftwood or rocks with light test (2lb, 4lb max) as a mossy covering.

Tie it around filter intakes/outflows to hide them and add additional mechanical pre/post filtration.

Ebay is always a good choice for me. They also sell christmas Moss.

java moss doesn't need much light at all... It thrives in clean water. You will enjoy moss more if you attach it to a rock or a peice of driftwood. It seems to grow differently and looks much nicer.

You'll have to trim it occasionally and make sure you dont let any of the peices float around. Little bits of it will attach to stuff and grow like crazy.

If you dose your NPK (Macro not just Micro) and have good Co2 it will grow visably more appealing.

I like to vaccum mine and trim it once every second week plus i roll any free-floating balls around a bit.

It grows alarmingly fast if you have a lto of light. at 1wpg its very mellow and easily manageable but at near 3wpg it can take over the tank if you dont keep the peices small.

Java Moss!

Java moss, in my experience, will grow regardless of lighting. Mine has never been picky. At one point, I had a thick carpet in a maternity tank with only an incadescent bulb in the hood. It grew terrific for at least 6 months that way.

I've noticed that at certain times there's this huge spike in the price. I have no idea why that is. I recommend just surfing the net, finding a cheap supplier and ordering some.

I, too, recommend attaching it to something. Yes, it will attach to plastic. In fact, I've had it "remove" the paint from some plastic ornaments before--no idea how or why that happened, but only the java moss could have done it.

It's imperitive to maintain the moss by pruning also. I've had it completely overrun a tank before and that's not pretty. DO NOT put any pieces or parts of it down the drain or toilet. I know this sounds stupid, but my grandmother had to dig up out entire back yard once because she got a little lax with throwing hers in the trash bin! It will grow almost anywhere.

Hope this helps. I've killed many, many aquarium plants over the years. Just never java Moss.

I second whatKBlane(Kev) says.

I bought two clumps of java moss a few months ago.

it does not need a lot of light tho it grows faster in my 75 with 220 watts.

I also have it in a 55 with 40 watts ..it grows like crazy.

I toss it in the trash after drying it out.

you do need to keep up on the stuff as it will over run the tank. I prune about 1 per month or so.
I also tied it to a craft matt to make grass/moss matts..it doesn't take long before it fills in.

it will attach to gravel too if you let it sit on the gravel..I tied it to rocks and it soon resembled a bush.

as long as you keep up on it it does well.
