Hey,
I'm totally new to salt but have my feet pretty wet from 10 years of freshwater. I recently purchased a JBJ 24 Deluxe Nano and I'm so stuck on stocking! I know I need to do lower level light critters, so I'm thinking zoas, mushrooms, possibly some fingers, etc. As far as critters, could a starry blenny or (I know, I know) a mandarin work out? I just want some shrimp and little critters. Thinking about a goby/shrimp pair?
What's your dream stocking suggestions?! I just can't decide between all these lovely critters.
Thanks so much.

the pods in such a small tank would have to be supplemented on a weekly basis for the mandarin, pricy (i know, i know :D)

as far as corals, shrimp and little critters your right in the ballpark, as well as a shrimp/goby pair

The only way a dragonette would make it in that tank is if you spent a small fortune each week on pods to feed it. Not worth it. Sucks that such an awesome looking and cheap fish turns out to be so hard to keep fed.

Best advice about stocking would be to always ask opinions about suitability and do research on fish that catch your eye before you buy it. I think a starry blenny would be ok in there... if you can find one. I have been searching for over a year to replace my lawnmower with a starry but have yet to spot a single starry at any LFS in the area and I have a couple LFS looking for one for me each week.

As for the pods, I've heard of some people using hang-on-the-back filters as a mini refugium and getting a nice little supply of pods going in there. Ideas? I don't know what all it would entail. They do sell bottled pods at my LFS.
So far, I've got either a yellow watchman with a tiger pistol OR a high fin/black ray goby with a shrimp OR a dracula goby/shrimp combo and a starry blenny and a black clown. Basically I want an appropriate goby/shrimp combo.
I'd like zoas, shrooms, pulsing xenia or a flower pot, green star polyps and frogspawn.
Thanks!

Everything sounds good except for the flowerpot. I have never known anyone to keep on of those much longer than a year.. they look great but just don't make it in an aquarium.

A small HOB refugium is not enough.. a mandarin will eat 1 pod every 5 seconds if given the chance.. that is a lot of pods. You need a good size refugium to grow that many. You can get a mandarin to eat other foods but even if they eat it there health still seems to decline.. they really need the pods as the staple to their diet.

Thanks for setting me straight, Ace. I knew you had to have a pretty steady supply, but I was hoping to rig it something. He just doesn't belong with me. Do you have any other suggestions or do you think I'm stocked?
Also, I was considering the addition of an Oceanic protein skimmer. They are designed to go in the Oceanic BioCubes, but I think it would work. Opinion?

Hmmm thats odd. I kept a Mandarin in a 10gal nano reef for over a year with great success. I had a HOB fuge that grew pods and I also fed bloodworms once a day. The only reason I no longer have him is because he decided to carpet surf on the one day I forgot to replace my glass top. And I never had to buy pods. I stocked my tank once when after I cycled it and let it grow some for a month. Then I got my clown and waited another month. Then I got my mandarin.

Ya I have read it and its not very accurate in my opinion. Yes it has good information but I know plenty of people who have been keeping Mandarins successfully in nano aquariums without having to buy pods. Its not that hard if you have the proper setup. Like I said mine was incredibly fat and happy before he decided to carpet surf when I forgot to replace my lid. He was incredibly skinny when I got him and I atleast doubled his size within 2 months.

i would not do the protein skimer because it really isnt necessary and when i tried to do it in my nano cube, it was to difficult
