i use the marine land explorer. its perfect. the top is so tight, that there is almost no evaporation. the filter provides just enuf current for happy fish. it looks great if you get teh black model, not fuity orange or pink. here is apicture....

JBJ 12 gal deluxe nano cube

Check out their website! http://www.jbjlighting.com/sys_12g_nanocube.html I've heard a lot of good things (i.e., good customer service willing to replace broken items). This new deluxe model should solve a lot of the previous problems. I was impressed enough to buy two; one for a freshwater planted tank and the other for a nano reef. I ordered them from http://www.petsolutions.com ($149.00 each and free shipping because I ordered two!).

OK - it is rather simple

Add live sand, live rock, water, plug in pump and light and it's done. How many more instructions are necessary.

Heater hasn't seemed necessary, if the room is comfortable for people, the tank seems to do ok.

Mine has been up since Feb. -- mushrooms have grown from quarter size to 4" across - scallops, feather dusters, anemones, shrimps, blennys, crabs all look like they don't mind the small space.

I get water from a local shop (at .99 a gallon I'm not dealing with mixing my own). I change a gallon of water every week on the just because basis. The chemistry checks perfect.

I have the older unit - the newer one has more light / gal and the fans. Don't know if I want one or not as this one is very quiet. My hood also does not close tight which is slightly annoying but I live with it. Put a little weight on it and it does ok.

Ballast went out sooner than I expected and hood disassembly is not a lot of fun but is doable.

I haven't set up after a recent move and bought this spur of the moment so I would have at least something to watch. Haven't regretted it.

maxijet is good brand for powerheads, i have one of those and a rio in my tank, the suction cups of the rio always fall out and the maxi jet has this "inovative triple suction cup" stand thing which is neat, at my lfs they are really expensive but in catalogs or online they're like $20 for one thats about 295gph (the maxijet 1200)

I've had my 12gal. JBJ Nano set up for almost a year and have never had one problem with it...one the best tanks, in my opinion...especially for a beginner. An after market heater fits perfectly, in the same chamber as the return pump.

My 12gal. nano houses a 1" Fuzzy Lion, coral banded shrimp, horseshoe crab, and lots of zoos, shrooms, and a large Hammer coral.

Just a few more weeks until the JBJ 24 gal. Nano comes out...I'm going to buy one those too. I would recommened them to anyone.

Toyman 129 -- Your tank sounds exactly like what I want. Did you keep the lighting that came with it or did you change it? Did you change anything or just start it as it came out of the box? Doyou have pictures? Thanks!
