Just lookin for some info on these fish! Have been reading for weeks, but a few questions i can't find the answere to!
First, just laid my hands on a 50g tank. I have 2 other tanks, one 40g goldie tank and a 30g tropical tank! Want a new challenge. So here goes.
Would a green terror work in the tank with a JD? 2 males, tank not big enough for breeding! It's been cycling for 2 weeks so still got a couple of weeks to decide what fish to use!
I use sand, is that ok for a JD? I know they dig, but can he dig sand? I have a fluval 304 for filtration, so that will be ok.
This is a compleat noob question, but can you put your hand in the tank with a JD? will he not bite you?
2 jd's in a 50g tank will be ok? they get 8" long?
Can you keep 2 males in the same tank?
Last, what do people preffer, Terrors or JD's?

what are the measurements to the tank?
The GT I had for 4 years and it didn't get over 8" I think it was a female so a male might not work though. Also I think a 12" GT is not too common. Jeff Rapps has some wild caught white saum adults and the one I saw at a show and it was MAYBE 8-10".
 
what about an adult JD? 2 in a 50g ok?
it's about 52" long, 20" wide, 15" high, works out about 51g uk.
I'll go with JD's since the terrors seem a bit big! :) thanks
 
so its almost 70 gallons US? I would still say that the two would work. But The JD being the smaller fish it would work better in the long run. If you did want to try the two get them both at 1" and introduce them at the same time. I have both of these fish in a 55 gallon to grow out while my big tank is getting finished, but i wouldn't have a problem keeping either fish in that tank(55gallon)

How about the sand question? will sand work with JD's?
 
JD's are such great fish. You could definitely fit two in there with good filtration, but I would buy them young, as N8DOGG said, or buy two that have already paired up.

As far as sticking your hand in the tank, yes, you can definitely do that! These are certainly aggressive fish, but unless you train them to look for food in your hand, they probably won't even approach it. To be honest, a lot of how aggressive your fish is depends on the fish itself and how you raise it. Mine was timid to begin with, and lived alone for about a year without being fed feeder fish. I recently bought some oscars and tinfoil barbs for the tank that he could have easily swallowed or killed, but he doesn't even chase them. In fact, I think he likes the company.

When you are choosing a substrate, just choose something that is easy to clean. I have never used sand, so I can't tell you one way or the other on that, but JD's are messy fish (I can't seem to teach them to chew with their gills closed), so be prepared.

I had a Green Terror in with my JD in a 90 US gal and they worked well together. I did put them together when they were on the small side so they grew up together. I found that as the JD grew larger he tolerated the GT less and less but he was a male and the GT was a female so that I'm sure had a lot to do with it. They would lock up here and there but nothing too severe, overall I really love both fish together. In my experience the Green Terror was more interactive and the JD has phases when he'll come up for food when you feed and phases when I'm not sure he's eating anything. Good luck with what ever you decide.
