Coming up on three weeks ago I picked up a killer deal on craigslist for a 75g tank. Included in the tank were 3 CPDs. I've never kept them before, never had an interest....until I saw them up close. They are fantastic.

I have either 2 males and 1 female(most likely), or 2 females and one male. I'm not 100% sure, but I'll get some pics later. Anyway, I've had this 5.5g setup for man months now, and I've never really done anything with it. Seemed to perfect to try breeding CPDs. So, today I begin. I realize that 3 is a very small number to start off with for breeding, but if I'm successful, I'll have more. If in a month or 2 I've made no progress, I'll buy 4-5 more and go from there.

Tank specs:

Tank:5.5g
Filter: Tom Rapids Mini Cannister and a dinky wannbe Tetra sponge filter w/carbon
Temp: 78F

I've got to run a quick errand, but when I get back I'll catch the CPDs and begin drip acclimation.

males have real dark black marks on their tails and anal fin females have a dark gray where males have black,.. it wont show up till they feel dominate and mature,.

these are both males, (not my pics)
see the stripes on the fins and the deep grey/blue of the body my females are almost as dark gray in the body but just the older females,
they are almost identical so spend a lot of time watching them and the more secure they feel the darker they get,..

also they really like to have an arched piece of wood to spawn under my love it,..
i started with 9 and ended up with way to many to count in less than a year

here's a link with a pic of females and some good info

Well, I guess CPDs have low survival instincts, because those were the easiest fish I've ever caught. I was all prepared to spend an hour fishing them out. I mean, come on, 3 tiny fish in a 75g tank. Well, took, literally 2 minutes.

Definitely have at least one male and one female. The third one was hard to get a shot of and in person I can't exactly tell. Probably male.

All 3, the one I can't tell is in the middle, I'm 90% for male:

And now we wait:

Nice experiment

be careful submissive males don't usually exibit black stripes if they are bossed around by the dominate male,..and they look just like females till there is more plants to hide in and more girls to court,..lol

One week in, nothing to report.

Simply putting the three in one tank and letting them sit may not be the way to go. I've read that separateing the males from the females, using a plastic divdier in the same tank, for a few days and then letting them mix can result in spawning.

Anybody?
