JMHart's Celestial Pearl Danio Breeding Experiment

I kept mine together and they spawned constantly. I never saw them spawn but did notice several times when the males coloring was real deep and bright. I left mine in a 10G planted tank with some taiwan moss and driftwood and rock pieces and a few other tall plants like willow leaf hygro. When I noticed a fry at the top of the tank in the hygro was when I realized I had eggs and they were hatching. What I did next was totally blonde... but who cares......Every two or three days I siphoned thru the gravel with a small hose which drained into a large home depot white paint pail. When I got done with that I would catch the newly hatched fry that had been hiding in the gravel and put them in a grow out tank. Really, just about every 2 or 3 days and I was siphoning out 25-30 newly hatched fry each time. I think I had 7 adults at the time. If the cpd's can find the eggs and fry they will eat them. The fry stay in the gravel until they can freeswim to the top of the tank. I found the fry stayed at the top of the tank and the adults always stayed on the bottom....thus, that is how some fry can survive in the tank. They just need to make that long trip from gravel to top once and they're ok. The way I did it really didn't put any unnecessary stress on the adults with moves. They stayed put and knew me as the crazy gravel vaccing lady!!

Interesting.

Since this is a breeding setup, I left it bare-bottomed---- do you think I'd be better off adding something to the bottom?

Also, I've been varying the food, because I can't quite seem to find anything that they really devour. Live black worms seem to be the favorite, but that's only compared to FD blood worms(which float, so they get ignored), and sinking Aquadine duraflake.

I would add substrate with the parents in there. They have a reputation of being big egg/fry eaters.

I fed mine microworms at least every other day, crushed brine shrimp flakes and shaved frozen bloodworms....Just take a sharp knife and shave real tiny. Super conditioning food and they love it. They are not surface feeders at all.

Updates:

Nothing yet. I've purchased 10 additional CPDs, (got a great deal, $2/each locally). Couldn't pass it up.

Anyway, they're still young, so won't be producing for a while.

I'm leaving all of them in the 5.5g, but the project is more or less going on hiatus. I'm leaving in 2 weeks, to go to Thailand for 16 days, and then most like (cross your fingers) moving across the country and buying a house at the end of June.

So, like I said, CPD breeding experiment is more or less on hiatus because I won't have time to really put effort into it.

CPD breeding experiment is a failure.

All CPDs dead: During my 16 day trip to Thailand, the water in this tank dropped so low that the thermostat of the heater was above the water level......tank overheaded and cooked all CPDs.

Sad yes, but between all 4 tanks this was the only problem I had. I had auto-top offs on the rest of the tanks. All and all, 16 days away and no other major problems, so as sad as it is I was relieved that nothing else happened.
