Well, I just found out this morning that my job could be going away in the next 90 day or less. Needless to say I'm in a kind of panic mode right now. I'm not all that concerned about keeping the lights on as I know I can deliver pizzas or throw boxes at UPS long enough to do that. Hardly glamorous and sexy and certainly not a career, but it's better than being skinny.

It's been 6 years since I've actively looked for work and the economy here is really slow. My initial feelers seem to indicate that no one is hiring in my field (IT). Any ideas on how to get my foot in the door?

I'm 28 so I really don't want to make pizza delivery a way of life for sure. I'm not gonna sit at home and starve though when there are jobs like that where I could start tomorrow.

Your best bet is to look at sites like Careerbuilder.com or Monster.com

Don't just post a resume, hardly ever works. Post your resume and then look through the listings and hit every place thats even close to what you want to do. I got my job through Careerbuilders. Its something I enjoy doing, won't get rich from it, and there is room to move up through the company if I want. They are actually pushing me to take a job now but it involves to much office time and I enjoy the outdoors aspect of the job right now.

I've been on Careerbuilder casually for a few months, but haven't got any jobs. I did get a few interviews though. I'm seriously tempted to go back to the place that offered me a position a few months ago and see if they're still hiring.

getting a job is a full time job

100 good applications = 10 good interview = 1 good job offer

the best place to be is to have 2 or 3 good offers

the ratios go down the better your cv is and the more relevant experience you have on it...

point is, do the hard graft and you'll get the job you want, rather than the the job you get

i was made rdundant 4 years ago and got the job with the company i wanted...i've done ok as a result and my income has increased by 50%...really i do better because its the job i want in the company i want...

do the graft...

I would absolutely do that. And tell everyone you know that you're looking.

I'd also recommend using LinkedIn - it's a good networking site, where you make and use connections - I know several folks who've had good luck with it.

There are also some decent sites where you can set up keyword searches in your field, and even define the search engine to return possible matches within a certain geographic area from your house (within 5 miles, 25 miles, etc.) Indeed.com is one, can't think of the others offhand. Also try dice.com for IT jobs.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, one last little bit. Finding a good job takes a while. And you always get more offers if you're actually working. I'd hit the pizza delivery job day one, and let that tiny little bit of extra income float you while you look for a "real" position.

Where are you located? My company almost always has openings, I can see if there's anything that might suit you. Even better if you're willing to relocate.

I'm in Wichita, KS. I would strongly prefer not to relocate, but I'm not completely closed to the idea. I'm single so I'm willing to do some traveling if necessary.
