Joel's 1st Marine Build

Can you do me a favor and move that tonga branch. I'll just leave it at that :)

LMAO.. yes, thank you, that bit of advice was definitely needed. LOL.

Looks like you have some boulders in the tank, you need to find some big shelve/flat pieces to build with. It is hard to aquascape with only round boulders.

adding to that, why dont y make one side higher then the other? Or maybe have an open patch of sand in the middle and build around it, like a small reef, with a centerpiece coral?

Yes, thanks for the suggestions folks (especially about making my tank a little less "PG-13" :grinno:). I'd like to get some more LR in my sump, so maybe I'll get a few more pieces of dry and a few more live and then try some different combinations. I can look for good flat stack-able rock and then to make a nice cave-rich, reef.

As for cycling, am I correct in thinking that I can start adding a CUC after my ammonia spikes and falls? I'm thinking for that I would just start with some snails and maybe a fighting conch (since I like the name).

As for stocking, I just can't shake this obsession with lionfish....Could I do a semi-aggressive predator tank? Say....

Dwarf Lion
Valentini Puffer
Dwarf Flame Angel (or some other active fish?)

You kind of need to wait closer to the end of your cycle. Ammonia and nitrites should be zero and nitrate should be fairly low (but ideally zero) before you add any inverts.

I don't have any experince with those fish except the angel so can't help you there. All I would say is that if you intend to go reef later, the puffer will need to go and the flame might too (if it's a nipper). Totally clueless on the lion.

i have never seen a lion in a reef tank. and if u did you would not be able to get small, fast, vibrant fish like clowns, royal gammas, or gobies, the lion would probably eat most of those.

Quiet Time

Hmm, ok, will have to do some more thinking about my stocking options. I would like to leave myself open to corals down the road....

Another post-to-get-feedback-and-also-remind-myself-later-on: How to make my overflow quiet. My OF makes a repeated gurgling sound, which I guess is caused by water flowing down the tube sucking in air which has no where to go and has to gurgle back out. I've read some posts that say durso stand pipes don't actually fix this unless you tinker with your return pump strength. I've also read about some other interesting techniques. So I think I'll try the following:

Technique 1: Poke hole in tube at bottom near sump. I'll investigate by lifting tube so that a tiny part of the opening is exposed to the air. If that kills the noise, then I think a release hole at the bottom would do the same thing -- based on the idea that it allows a proper channel for air flow.

Technique 2: Send a thin piece of airline tubing down the larger overflow-to-sump tube. I've read that, at the proper depth, such a tube stops the gurgle by giving the air a non-turbulent way out.

Technique 3: Better covering to overflow box -- maybe enough padding will make the noise negligible.

The noise right now doesn't bother me *too* much, but I would like it to be a little quieter. I don't want it to be completely silent, though. I would like to have some noise I can immediately tell if there's a problem with the flow and it stops.

Gurgle.

Maybe this will help?

Basically the guy put a ball valve on his return line to reduce the return pumps flow which stopped the gurgle. I believe I have read this before as well and if it does work, it would be a permanent/safer fix than some of the other options. I wouldn't go crazy with the padding. Last thing you want is a clog. There has to be a way to quiet it down.

Maybe give Lifereef a call. They are supposed to have good customer service.

Thanks for the good ideas -- I'll be sure to look into them -- though I'm guessing I'll leave things as-is if it looks like the fix is too complicated / risky -- the gurgling isn't *too* bad....

Instead of messing with quietness, I picked up some more rock and rescaped! I tried to arrange it to create some caves -- sort of successful I think. As my cycling continues I'll probably try a few more configurations. The cycling is picking up now I think -- haven't tested, but there's a definite sour smell from the water now that I believe indicates ammonia (based on my experience with FW).

Here are some pics of the new layout:

Stay tuned for more!

PS: I got roped into the Mafia 64.5 and lynched you (greech) and Ace for making fun of my tonga branch :evil_lol: I think that's how it works, right??
...and *everyone* seems to be lynching you (FishFriend)....What up with that?!?!?

If its 45.5 then u are supposed to lynch me lol, thanks for the support!

Mafia == Wacky.....maybe I'll get in on the next one :)

I tested this morning and the tank is already showing ammonia and nitrite, so cycle is rolling. Question though....

The LR I picked up has some red coraline algae, but also some other stuff in varying shades of white / yellow / pink / etc.. Should I actively scrub those rocks in a separate bucket, or can I simply let things die off and then rely on skimming and wc's to get the gunk out of the system?

Thanks!
