8. Any identifications are great! I hope I'm not boring you all...I stared at this stuff for hours yesterday. Everywhere you look is another live thing.
I am a newbie too, but I will give it a try: The green stuff appears to be green algae, the purple thing is probably purple algae. And that is definitely a crab, no matter what Grins says. (Wait until Grins see your crusted coral.)
No, I got everything from Tampa Bay Live Rock so no LFS was involved. I'll try to explain my understanding of this. I think that the plan is to not let the tank spike really hard with ammonia during the cycle. In fact, I'm not supposed to let it get above 1ppm. I'm supposed to modulate this through water changes. This helps (I'm guessing) not to kill everything off the rock. Because this may interfere (again, guessing) with bacteria growth...since it's not allowed to spike, the dealer sends a bag of dried bacteria...I don't know what kind...that I mix with the tank water and then release. That's where I'm at. Again, I may be misunderstanding the process but since it isn't a typical cycle (at least not what I've read about), I'm making some assumptions.
Hmmm, no experience with doing it that way. I've stayed clear of rock from TBS mostly because of the shrimp hitchikers and rock I can get elsewhere but many are very happy with it. Perhaps they'll chime in on cycling in that manner.
