Are African Cichlids pron to jumping out of an uncovered tank?
I have a coal stove down in the area where the tank is so I am keeping my glass canopy open to dissipate some heat.

Not likely to but I have seen it happen. My 180 had an opening in the top that was about 20"x6" shortly after introducing 3 new Eureka reds the chase was on by another male in the tank. One of the newbies was chased right out of the tank and landed on the floor. He was ok and put back in.

You can custom fit a wire screen mess from a local hardware store to place it in stead of the lid or use egg crate custom fitted as well.

Neither are hard to cut..

Egg crate sounds like a good choice or I have heard people suggest adding frozen bottles of tank water. The latter I will be trying soon as I have a wood burning stove in the same room with my tank.

Are they pron to jumping? I don't think so... Can it happen? You bet!!!

We had a holding female Rusty jump out of a 5.5g WITH a versa-top covering the tank. The water level was pretty high and she somehow wedged herself between the glass and the top of the tank and got out. We came home just in time, both mom & fry were fine...

Can you freeze a 20oz soda bottle and float it in the tank for a few minutes or is that too much of a temp change too fast?
