So, I've lost a fish to the carpet and I know a lot of others have too. Right now, I have my coral beauty angel in a 10 gallon qt, while I decide whether to get another angel and intro them both at the same time. I noticed the other night that when I turned out all the lights in the room she's in and then turned her light off she freaked out and started splashing around and jumping at the surface. So, I turned on a small light off to the side and she quit doing it and calmed down and went to hide in the back to sleep. I waited a while and turned off the other light and she was fine then. Since that night, I've made sure I turn her light off first and let the room get dark gradually and she doesn't exhibit that behavior.
I'm wondering, since it does seem that many carpet surfing incidents happen at night, do you think that maybe the fish get spooked more easily when it's pitch dark in their home where it wouldn't ever be completely dark in nature? Those of you who have had jumpers, do you have moonlights and do you leave them on all night?
My fish seem to really like the moonlight and I have it attached to the power switch with my fuge light, so the two stay on together all night long. I can get up in the middle of the night and look in on the tank and they'll slowly drift out of hiding to come greet me. If I shine a flashlight in the tank, it doesn't seem to bother them, where when I used to do that and it was totally dark in there, they'd get spooked and swim around all crazy trying to hide. My moonlight is blue and doesn't cover the entire tank, just the middle 30".
Obviously, this is all just speculation, but I definitely think the fish like it and I'll be getting moonlights for my other tank as well. What do you all think or notice with/without your moonlights?
