Jumping fish theory....

I haven't had any fatal fish jumping accidents yet. Usually, we turn off the tank lights before we turn off the room lights. The fish always float around to their sleeping spots and "tuck themselves in" so then when the room lights are off their are ready for sleep.

When I first had my SW tank it was a 30 gallon and one night I heard a thunk noise and we turned on the lights and my watchman goby was up at the top of the water looking quite dazed. He was probably spooked for some reason and tried to swim up. Thank goodness I have a hood on my tanks!

I think its good to have some type of lighting to allow them to get settled in before complete darkness.

The fish think that we are in water as well. They think that water is bluer on the other side... How else can you explain how startled they look when they jump out? Because, you can't deny, they look really startled...
