My girls found our kuhli loach on the floor this AM? I feel certain he didn't jump. Any ideas what might have happened?

Do you know your water params? pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temp. What else is in the tank? How long has the tank been setup?

Check the water parameters. When I first got my khulis they would swim from the bottom to the top at high speed along the glass. Not too much of a stretch to think they could jump.

If they are unhappy with the water quality they could jump. Be careful of your filter intake with those guys too. If I let the check ball in my intake get dirty and jam open a little my khulies swim right into the filter and I find them a week later emaciated and pale.

My Ph & ammonia were checked and were perfect. My lfs checks my water for me. I live in town and w/in walking distance. My levels were really high from Sat. - Mon. Tue. (yesterday) when he checked them, they were perfect. Another factor to some problems was that my water temp. got too low (about 62 maybe less). I had to get a new heater. I like to keep the temp. 78-80, but it's been steady at 74. My snail died yesterday too.

I just got 2 powder blue dwarf gouramis yesterday which are very skiddish. My red serpae try to nip their fins, but the gouramis just dart away. Here's what I currently have:

20G:
2 powder blue gouramis
4 zebra danios
4 platys
3 red serpae
2 frogs
1 catfish

Do they check your nitrites or nitrates? That would tell if your tank is cycled or not. Also, when they test your water, ask for exact numbers and jot them down. I've heard of stores saying the water was "perfect" when it was far from being so, "good" and "really high" don't tell us much in terms of trying to help  !! Your own test kits would be really nice to have, if you plan on sticking with the hobby. You can get a pretty cheap master test kit from www.bigalsonline.com. The loach probably jumped due to the water condtions, if they were "really high" over the weekend.

if possible, it would be great if you could get the exact numbers for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. ammonia and Ph aren't the only things to check. 'perfect' and 'really high' don't tell us enough, mostly because the LFs's don't always know what is good. the dead snail may also have affected water quality.
what kind of tank maintenance do you do? water changes, gravel cleaning, filter cleaning? how long have you had the tank? knowing those things can give us a better idea of what a problem may be. of course, the loach may have just overshot the tank without meaning to.

I have been doing 50% water changes 1-2 times daily since Sat. None today though. I have a HOB whisper filter.
