Hi all,

I got 3 new Yoyo Loaches (Botia lohachata) I put them in my Quarantine tank. They are in there now for 3 days. One of these 3 fish is acting strange from time to time.

He would go lay down on one of his sides on the bottom, and then flip flap, and he jumps up about 4cm. he does this a couple of times in a row
and then he goes lay down somewhere or swims around slowly (compared to the other 2).

I really worry if he has some parasite or other disease.
My water temp is 26 deg (celcius) and i change about 15% water every day. I also have a sponge filter in the tank with some stones in it. Some sort of combination filter. It is new so i don't expect any bacteria in it yet.

If it is a parasite what should i do?? Another quarantine tank to separate him from the other two ??

Thanks in advance :bowing:

Possibly the first sign of Ich, however like Lupe says, we really need to know the perams and whether you acclimated them.

Since the QT is not cycled, you may want to grab some gravel from your cycled tank and put it in the QT to kickstart the cycle, but lets see what others have to say...

Water params etc.

Hi,

when i got the fish i slowly (drip method) got them used to the Q-tank's water.

I checked the water params today, My ammonia was high. 1.5mg/L
The Q tank is small about 10liters i guess. So i did a water change like this:
I took a air hose and slowly removed half of the tanks water.
Then i slowly added also with an air hose new water that i threaded with tetra aqua save.

after that i left the tank for an hour. and then repeated the process.
and checked the ammonia levels again. they are now as good as zero.

I will have to keep a closer eye on the amonia in this small tank, because even i did small water changes every day (about 10%) the ammonia managed to rise in just 3 days to 1.5mg/L and i don't think i am over feeding them, they just get some food in the morning when i leave to work.

i will check if the fish does the jump thing again, if it does i will let you know.

Thank you for your help

Any amount of ammonia, will harm your fish.
You can use products like Prime to detoxify ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
From now I would not feed your fish for awhile just to be safe.
And do about 50% daily water changes.
Sounds like your Q-tank isn't cycled.

Thanks all

Hi,

It has now been about a week since I saw the Yoyo do the jump thing and i posted it on the form..

Since then i changed some things.
I upgraded my Q tank's size so now they are in a tank that is almost 3 times bigger.
I monitor the ammonia levels every day make sure they are realy low
(can not get them to zero as the tank is not cycled).
Each day I do about 40% water change (slowly trough a air hose).
When doing the water change i remove all the poo, the Q tank has no substrate so i can clearly see and
vacuum all.
Also i do not feed them much.
I also added more cover in the tank.

Just i worry how to know if i under feed them??
Funny thing is some times i can see a yoyo sleeping in a tree.. (fake plant)

The good thing is that since my changes about a week ago i have not seen any jumping.
