I was in PetSmart today, spending another hundred bucks I don't have on fish gear (Geez, this is an expensive hobby), and saw a ceramic air stone - wouldn't that do just as well, with a 'burst point' (just a push fit connector) inserted into the tubing in case of a blockage?

Yes, that looks good. I saw that page and it terrified me because I am crap at DIY - too many places for me to screw that baby up and end up poisoning my two gundogs with a serious breach of the CO2 system...LOL!
