Just a quick question about hotdogs and cichlids.

You asked for advice and there it is. Dont ask people to justify your doing things that may not be in the best intrest of your fish. I doubt it will kill them but it won't be good for them either.

I agree with fish_freak on this. I read lots of the posts and often people asks something and they do the exact opposite and then ask for more help.

Feed that Oscar a live cricket. You can hold it over the water and it will come after it, that is much more fun that feeding it a lame hot dog.

better off to start your own tank of feeder guppies or mollies. you risk disease if you feed fish from the store w/o quarantine. with your own fish, you can make sure they are healthy and fed good food. also, avoid goldfish, they are quite fatty and lack nutrition- the feeder fish version of a hotdog.

but yes, it is so fun to watch, in a morbid sort of way.

Plus then you know what your feeders ate and in turn what kind of extra nutrition they will have when used as food.

I would skip the hot dogs. The only hot dogs I would think of feeding an oscar would be BoarsHead or another kind with no fillers/preservatives, but then I still probably wouldnt do it.

When I had an oscar I fed him lizards, frogs, crickets, peacock hybrid babies, but I based their diet on a quality pellet(NLS) and gave them these "treats" every now and then.

K jeez you dont have bomb me.
I'm sorry if you feel you got "bombed" but you asked a question and where given advice and then asked if well how about just once. I persoanly find it kind of rude to look for that justifacation for your action's. No where is written you must take any advice given to you in life but you also should not look to be justified in doing something that is not a good idea. I hope you don't have any hard fellings if that came off a bit harsh sometimes its hard to express your self in text. Feed him other treats. He will love beef heart and it is very good for him. Pea's are also a good treat as well as some other legum's. Oscars are very ominverous so vegetable matter is great in there diet. He would also love some feeders for sure but make sure they are healthy if you do decide to go that route. I don't feed my fish feeders in my personal experience if they don't grow up eating feeders they tend to be a little more peacefull when your keeping sevreal cichlids in a tank together.
Another wonderfull treat for them that will really make them show some great colors is frozen krill. Any pet super store has it.
