Just a rant.

You should try and do a mail in rebate some time. You better hope you follow those directions to a T or you wont get your money. They have done stories about it on the news.
Basicly aussie you didnt live up to your end of the bargain. Ya maybe they should have just done you the favor but in buissness doing favors gets you know where. You must have known the Exchange policy as you said that you forgot and threw the fish in your compost. Im sure people try to take advantage of the situation all the time. Personaly I never reaturn fish. All LFS are at least 20 min from me so it would cost me more in gas than what most fish are worth.

I would see if your a loyal customer that drops 300 a month on fish and supplies that they could trust your honesty on that, if your not giving them high or at least higher volumes they tend to not care as much. When I worked in the LFS that was pretty much the policy and still is now that I am in the serviceing department. Bigger the customer the better the breaks.

Hi,

I had a really bad thing happen to me at a petstore too. It was a long story, but it ended up that a stupid Home Hardware would not pay me for the baby fish I gave them. They said that they would give me a hundred bucks for the babies, but I only got forty bucks! It was a money crazed person incharge of that stupid store.

I would have demanded I got back all the babies if they were going to rip you off for $60 bucks! That is more then just a few bucks which is easier to swallow on a garuntee for the $3.50 fish.

Hi,

I couldn't get the babies back because they killed them all. Me and my mom faught hard, but that stupid money crazed women would not pay us! Many people in my town hate her! Since then I have never walked in that stupid store again!

Yeah but unfortunatly you just can't trust people's word. Plus from experience a lot of people start trying to take advantage of you after you do something once. Then they tell someone who tells someone and people start complaining that the policy is not fair because it doesn't apply to everyone so on and so forth.
True, you can't trust everyones' word. But, exceptions can be made to the policy. Loyal customers and trusting that customer is good for business. Flexibility of the stores owners will make customers satisfied and likely to be repeat customers. I am not at all saying all customers can expect free replacements on products. After all the subject here is $3.50 - not a $150 filter. Also, from the post, this is not a huge chain store, but a LFS. I can see a large store not budging from a policy. After all, most employees at certain large chain stores could care less about any customer - loyal or not.

If I had a similar situation of this topic at a LFS and got bluntly treated about "policy", I would likely be blunt about where I'll take my future business.

There's a saying about "the customer is always right", well sometimes, but not always...
