Just Bought 125 Gallon Tank

lol sooo sorry, I had a dumb moment there. It's an fx5...lol

I'm running an fx5 along side my magnum 350 pro. The are a bit pricey, but in my opinion, totally worth it. Best filter purchase I have ever made. Every now and then you can find good deals on them on the interweb.

Thanks for the information on the canister filters. Does anyone know a good site to go to that would have better prices. I have seems some people mention that they are lot more expenseive in store. For instance the marineland 350 is $149.00 at petsmart and I have heard several people mention that you can get for $99.00.

ebay is the best for finding random deals, otherwise I usually use the google shopping option to look for prices. It's pretty good at finding good deals in most cases.

I run 2 canisters on all 90 and up tanks...alternating cleaning every 2-3 months on them.

I have a Cascade 1200 on my 72g along with a Penguin 350, and in no way shape or form is one, or possibly even two of them, enough to filter a 125. It's a decent filter, but not the right one for the job. Go with the FX5, and if you need to, add an HOB like an AquaClear 110. The FX5 is so versatile, it puts the others to rest, IMO. It shuts off and purges air once every 24 hrs and it comes with an extra valve to make a separate hose if you want to use it to do water changes. Plus tons of room for media and a boatload of GPM. What more could you ask for? I got mine off of ebay for under $200.

Which ever route you decide to take, just take your time when setting up the tank and don't rush anything. If you take your time and make well, thought out, and suitable decisions you will end up with the tank of your dreams instead of something you slapped together and look at everyday saying I should have done this differently. I made that mistake with my first 120, then when I got my 125 I took my time and love it to bits lol. My girlfriend actually gets jealous sometimes and says I pay more attention to the tank and talk about it more lol.

i run two fluval 305's on my 125

Ditto:thm:. Research everything, read reviews, and do it right the first time.

FWIW I run 2 XP3's on one of my tanks and have been very, very happy with them.

I think you need 2 for that tank; most on this forum would generally agree that manufacturers overstate the "ratings". Generally speaking, there's no such think as too much filtration and, with two, there is less of a chance of a problem if one fails mechanically or if you loose a lot of good bacteria during filter maintainence.

Per your concern with sand, I have play sand substrate and have had no issues.

As for cost, I got mine on-line from Big Al's and they were like $30 less than the local big box pet retailer. Per other's suggestions, shop around as you'll likely save $ by buying on-line.

Good luck with your new tank. Congrats!
