Just experienced my first Earthquake

I'm from CA and I don't blame anyone on the East for being shaken up over it. Earthquakes aren't any fun to experience be it a 3.0 or 9.0

Well, when you say "Nothing to flip over about" many would find that a crazy way to think. If you got 3ft of snow, you'd flip over about it too, because it's so rare you don't think it could actually happen. I honestly can't say I ever expected an earthquake, so people in my area are scared crapless of it. Likewise, something like a massive blizzard, meh, get those every winter, power goes out, pull out some more blankets. It's all a matter of perspective.
not really.... though i might have to shut my window....

I have to say, I agree with Stargazer here and find it completely insensitive how some folks think nothing of calling anyone that was nerve-stricken from the earthquake. Some folks were even derogatory.... while I found some pictures floating around pretty amusing because there was minimal damage, I found the insensitivity of some other folks with their derogatory picking quite disturbing (on other sites)... the point is on the east coast, some have never even felt an earthquake much less know anything about them. Some folks just assume that an earthquake is a huge crack starting somewhere and swallowing anything in it's path. The fact is, there is just not enough experience or knowledge about them here. It's frightening... yes, especially when completely caught off guard and especially with things like Terrorist Attack in our recent past (recent means within the generation). What has come to be realized though which may be a good thing is how unprepared we are on this side of the island.

obviously if our cellphone service was down for an hour, it was a little more than a "little shake".

A whole hour!?!?

When the '89 San Francisco quake hit, we couldn't reach our relatives in the area for 3 days.

As was mentioned before, it's only being laughed at because there was no deaths, and because West Coasters are no strangers to quakes that actually kill dozens of people. When compared, this quake was mild in comparison with most West Coast quakes.

The point being, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Even if people are laughing at you. In fact, since their laughing isn't killing you either, it must be making you stronger as well. Embrace it. Heck, by the time the next quake comes around, you'll could be strong enough to break out a surfboard and ride the warping earth!

lol, well said petluvr, well said indeed! We shouldn't be arguing over points of view, everyone is different. This quake didn't faze me, and it was my first (okay, was a surprised and worried for others, but not scared for myself). Petluvr had the same experianced, scared about it. Same boat, different reactions. Points of view shouldn't be argued.

I'll also add that when I lived in Tualatin, OR, we had a "100 Year Flood" which engulfed a major portion of the downtown area overnight. No deaths. Even being right in the middle of it, helping with sandbagging efforts to save our local businesses and neighbors, we were still able to laugh, especially at the other light hearted people in town. One guy moved a recliner and TV onto his roof, tethered a boat to his chimney, and stayed up there for the entire duration of the flood (around a week). Others were riding jetskis through the streets of downtown above the tops of cars that became trapped when the water got to them. We made the best of it. I also wouldn't have any problem if people from New Orleans laughed at us scrambling with sandbags and getting all worked up over such a relatively small amount of water. In comparison to the flood damage from Katrina, our flood was barely a puddle.

I guess I'm just saying that it's a waste of time and energy getting insulted or worked up over jokes or comments by people who don't take the situation as seriously as you do. Everyone has their own sense of humor, and the right to express it. There are others that appreciate humor, especially regarding "bad news". Myself included. It's a simple matter of looking on the bright side of life.

I am not at all insulted that I have been laughed at (I am sure) by many of you for being a baby
A (blankety blank blank) was scared and I hope I never have to feel it again. Props to those living in areas that have this regularly but I will not be visiting your area any time soon...LOL
