Just experienced my first Earthquake

the quake didn't shake me up one bit. my neighbors, fedex guy and some family members were freaked out, though.

what i'm waiting for, though...

  • we're a rain drop from an all time record breaking month of rainfall
  • first (noticeable) quake since my house was built
  • that "once in a lifetime" hurricane is heading straight for us... again
so in this region we don't know if we're going to get knocked over, blown away, slid off our foundation or swept out to sea until the beginning of next week. insert doomsday prediction here.

p.s. niribu is real. madcrawdad proved it. the magnetism is gone on my cans, too. :uhoh:

p.s.s. mom's completely freaked...
honey, you need to go out and stock up on everything now. you don't know when you'll be able to get out of the house again.
:shakehead:

ahhhh, i see. that's why they call you luppy. :grinyes:

A whole hour!?!?

When the '89 San Francisco quake hit, we couldn't reach our relatives in the area for 3 days.

As was mentioned before, it's only being laughed at because there was no deaths, and because West Coasters are no strangers to quakes that actually kill dozens of people. When compared, this quake was mild in comparison with most West Coast quakes.

The point being, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Even if people are laughing at you. In fact, since their laughing isn't killing you either, it must be making you stronger as well. Embrace it. Heck, by the time the next quake comes around, you'll could be strong enough to break out a surfboard and ride the warping earth!

Wow, I'm sorry, but you just completely missed the point as well. You cannot compare AT ALL California (west coast) and Virginia (east coast). It's like comparing a tomato to an apple. California is a hotspot for earthquakes -- Californians experience earthquakes frequently. Virginians - like never. As one scientist says, "once in a century". So as a Californian, (or west coast resident) you may be "conditioned" or "desensitized" from a earthquake taking place -- your infrastructure, is also built to withstand earthquakes. They have rules and regulations in regards to building safety for a reason. We, in the east, because earthquakes never happen, do not build our homes (or any buildings for that matter) for earthquake preparation.

Yes, nobody was seriously injured. But how does that make this situation anymore miniscule? I mean, seriously, do those of you in the west coast think that one (or several, or many) people need to shed blood to realize the seriousness of a matter? Does it help you sleep better at night to laugh and insult something that WAS (I don't care if it's laughable to you) shocking and frightening for some us in the east, who for many of us, was our first earthquake?

You brought up the 1989 San Francisco earthquake -- it was a 7.1 scale earthquake. You had no phone service for 3 days? That's really sad and unfortunate -- but at least Californians are used to the event of earthquakes and I'm sure were prepared to act upon one happening (or knew how one felt like for that matter). But you know what? Scientists have also said that if this recent earthquake in Virginia was between a 6.9-7+ scale earthquake, it would have been a very devastating one. They are estimating damages at $200,00,000 -- they said if this earthquake was a 7.0 scale one, damage would have been at least 2+ billion. But again, you cannot compare San Fran, CA and California -- Californians live in an area where earthquakes are a normal reality.

It's not the laughing that is getting to me -- it's the pompous arrogance that is coming across from some in the west that do not recognize that those of us on the east coast, have serious realities that we have to deal with even without this "earthquake". We are not built for earthquake like those of you in the west -- most of us have never felt one, did not know how to recognize one -- and yes, because we were not prepared for one, we did have damages. As said, the first thing that came to my mind when I felt the initial shake was a terrorist attack. That's something that many of us, in the DC-VA-NY area have to worry about because we are in a prime hotspot for psychotic terrorists to attack. We have more serious things to worry about here in the east than illegal immigration and trying to deal with not having enough money to run our state. But if downplaying and belittling something upsetting for others helps you grow a pair, by all means, do so. You will need it for later in life. :)

I expierenced the quake as well. I now live in Baltimore MD. I know most people were a little freaked out about this but I am from the midwest. Until you go through an F5 tornado, you dont know the definition of Freaked out! Waiting for Irene now... :headbang2:

I'm not loopy.lol I'm simply an average and sane person.;)

And chalk it up to living in the Pacific Ring of Fire. I've been desensitized to mild quakes. I actually felt even sleepier when a mild quake at intensity 5 struck. LOL!

Well.... I've never experianced a tornado OR an earthquake, and don't remember the hurricanes (they just blend in with all the other big storms we get) so right now Irene scares the crap outta me...

lol, nice one. I can laugh at myself sometimes. :D

Now, I have no issues with people joking around about how scared we of the east were about an earthquake, but our infrastructure wasn't built with earthquakes in mind. Something that would no little to no damage on the west can do massive damage here, because we don't have all that fancy anti-earthquake stuff built into every foundation and house. The West Coast would be just as A)davastated, and B)scared if a Cat 3 Hurricain went up their ally.... the South would be ready for it. 4ft of snow would shut down cities in the south for days, the north (like the Dacotas and Vermont) are used to it. Every region has it's own central issues, and would general laugh at another region if they were in the same boat for a few days. It's human nature to belittle something that you're ready for an expect, when you see someone scared of it elsewhere. Just my opinion here. :)

sane? maybe. average? by no means at all what-so-ever. i would watch how often you claim average as well. it waters down your credibility on your sanity claim. :D
but i consider above average a good thing....

anyway... who felt that thunder storm today? twas kind of a throaty one. it's been years since i've experienced one with such exuberance.
