Just experienced my first Earthquake

I live on the East Coast along the shoreline. I cannot believe how worked up people can get over such a minor occurrence. We had an earthquake - so what? It is a natural phenomena. Whether we had damages and death or not is immaterial. Getting your panties in a bunch is uncalled for. For those that were afraid - why? If you're safe an alive when all is said an done that's all that matters! Get over it and move on. Now back to my hurricane preparations. . . . . . .

Well said.

Or, one could say that an unchallenged opinion is one you don't deserve to hold. If someone chooses to believe that the earthquake we just had was some sort of life altering, scarring, ptsd inducing experience, that's entirely their prerogative, just like it's mine to consider that person a giant baby, and disregard their histrionics. In the grand scheme of things, by any standard, it was an exceedingly minor event, even at the epicenter. People who are freaking out about it need to put things in perspective, suck it up, and get over it.

I can't believe that this has turned into a peepeeing match.

I don't know how it did. Honestly, I think that even the smallest event can play a massive role in the world.

My hubby just secured our 37 tall aquarium stand to the wall due to tippiness. (I live in California). I'm planning to ask him to secure the stand of the 55 this weekend. Heaven forbid an aquarium were to fall on somebody.

Having said this, living where I do, any earthquake where absolutely nobody is killed, is a good one. There was a certain amount of property damage, but stuff is just 'stuff'. Hug those you love today, be brave, and keep moving forward.

What exactly is the point of arguing over personal opinions ? It's over now, everyone is accounted for, there was some unfortunate damage to some areas that will be rebuilt and some lessons were learned. Call it a day.

Its actually better if you dont strap them to any structure. Its better for the aquariums to dissipate the energy themselves than be attached to an object that that could continue to shake or has more mass and can therefor create more movement than if it wasnt strapped to a structure.

I would thinka stiff flexible connection would be best as many building codes require...one that doesn't do a forced fix but allows for some sway/dissipation of the induced force.

I've lived on the east coast, in the same state for my entire life. I was in work when the earthquake hit and while I was freaked out for all of about... 2.5 minutes... I got over it! I finished my shift, without evacuating, and even stopped to do some shopping after! Not saying it wasn't freaky, and a rare occurrence, but come on people GET OVER IT!

It's just entirely up to each individual how offended they wish to feel based on the way complete strangers on the other side of the country see a situation that doesn't involve them at all.

As for the wall of text directed at me that I'm too lazy to quote. Woah there. You completely missed MY point. You're talking apples and oranges, and I'm talking earthquakes. My comment was that no one died, and on the west coast they are used to large eathquakes. You confirmed these facts. I also said that the quake the other day on the East Coast was minor in "comparison" to the 1989 SF quake. Again, you confirmed this by posting the Richter measurements from the SF quake. Then you flew off the handle about everything you had just yourself confirmed! I don't live in California, I live in Oregon. We rarely have quakes here. All I was trying to do was offer a reasonable explanation of why people on the West Coast aren't taking it that seriously. I was also trying to lighten up the anger that was seeping into the thread. Even the mayor of New York went on SNL to say it was ok to laugh, shortly after 9/11. Laughter is also known as the best medicine, and there have been scientific studies that prove it does have health benefits, including psychological benefits, which I would imagine those traumatized by their first earthquake would benefit from. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that I'm sorry I bothered to try and help.
