St. Bernard and Black Lab mix, gonna be a big dog. She is black with a little white on her belly and nose. I decided to name her Emma; hopefully she will get along with Mickey my Rotwieler. So far so good, but I keep the two separated for now. Mickey is an old dog (9 or 10) and may not be ready to accept another dog in her turf. Mickey went around and made sure to pee on every spot that Emma did. Mickey growled a few times at Emma but nothing that was real aggressive. When Emma tried to sniff Mickey's bone she only pushed her out of the way. So I don't think I have a problem with Mickey becoming too aggressive.

I will keep Emma in the garage for now. At least until spring, the males in the neighborhood are running around looking to breed. And seeing as Emma isn't big enough to defend her it is better to keep her locked away until I can get her spayed. Hopefully Mickey will accept her, I mean she better, Emma isn't going anywhere.

Edit: I will try to get pics when I get home.

How old is she? I've always had good luck introducing a puppy into the pack, but older dogs sometimes are more challenging. Sounds like a sweetie!

My husband was checking the newspaper this weekend and found a brindle mastiff for sale--I think he does that just to torture me. No way we can get a puppy a month before we move!

I think she is 6 or 7 weeks old. It is hard to tell on puppies of bigger breeds just because they grow bigger. And, the other dog Mickey has pretty much lived by herself since she was a puppy. So I got to be careful that she doesn't get to aggressive when asserting that she is the dominant female. But, I'm not to worried, Mickey knows that I am the master and if I want a new dog to join our pack then she will have to learn to accept Emma. And I think it will happen it is just going to take time.

With such a young puppy, Mickey will probably come around--might not ever love the new addition, but tolerating her. Takes a few days for them to get used to each other, though. I try to monitor new pets for a few days, just to be sure.

Dogs are at least better than cats about accepting a new family member. :)

Yep, exactly what I thougth. I don't foresee any big problems. The puppy will whine a little for being separated from the litter and Mickey will be grumpy for having a new face around.

Here she is...

She seems to have some sort of skin irritant. She keeps itching in a few spots constantly. And I can see something that almost looks like a callus on her skin. So hopefully the vet tommorrow will reconize it when she is getting her shots and tell me what to do.

What a cutie! She has a really sweet little face. Was she from a local's litter? The skin irritation could be an allergy--puppies are often kept in dusty bedding around here, so can have little irritations that clear up once they are washed and put in a clean bed.
