Hey guys just set up my first 20 gallon tank.....
It is a 20 high
All I have in it right now is

one piece of lace rock that is 14lbs its pretty big
and about 10 lbs of tonga branch on top of it
and 30lbs of sand....

1 Penguin 550 power head and a heater.... and a cheapy 50/50 light
I am planning on getting a protein skimmer in about a month, until then i figure I could do a 10% weekly water change..... WIll I be okay with this setup???? how long should I wait until my first water change? the live rock was out of a established tank... and went from the tank to a bucket to my tank within an hour.... my second question is I am using a Instant ocean hydrometer and I added 1/2 cup per gallon of water... although my measuring of water could be slightly off when I mixed it up I got a reading of 1.025-.26 so I added alittle water to get it down to 1.024 is this a good starting area????? or should I get a new hydrometer Thanks

I got a big bucket of seal salt with reef crystals So Id like to keep mixing my own... I used a 5 gallon bucket added water and salt then, used a powerhead to mix it for 10 minutes before taking the salt reading... then add to tank

Try to find a LFS that has a refractometer to read your salinity. My hydrometer is consistently low. I.e.; if my hydrometer read 1.024, my water would be around 1.027---too high. In talking to people at the stores and the employees, this is fairly typical. Yours could be spot on, but I'd have the water checked.

Also, I use the bucket method like you do--10 minutes or so--never had any problems.
