I'm in heaven.......brousing the net and found a solution to the dreaded Juwel lack of light problem.

The link points to a replacement lighting bar available for all but the smaller Juwel tanks. Simply take off the flaps, remove the old light unit....replace it with this new T5 unit and pop the flaps back on! Bingo

I'm so happy now......the Trigon as a reef tank is on full steam ahead now!!!!! :)

The Juwel Trigon 190 is a corner tank with curved front. 50 gallon capacity. As standard it comes with a twin 18w flourencent light unit (which will now be replaced with a new T5 unit giving twin 39w) and a built in filter house. The filter house holds about 5 stages of filtration and the pump and heater.

I planning on:
1) changing the light unit for the T5's
2) just use the built in filter for heater housing and basic machanical filtration. The pumps are quite powerfull as well so they'll give quite good circulation with the addition of a powerhead or 2
3) Live rock and sand to do all the biological magic!
4) a skimmer of course. probably a hang on one although I'm open to suggestions as to exactly what sort would be best.

Then with reasonable stocking it should be relatively stabe. I've got anther Juwel Trigon 190 as a cichlid/odball tank and its never ever had a single problem.

The AquaC Remora is pretty much the best HOB skimmer for smaller tanks. The CPR Bak Pak 2 can also be pretty good, price/value ratio if you make sure you have the maxi-jet pump, not the Rio.

Lots of skimmers out there, just don't under any circumstances use a Seaclone or a regular Prizm. The seaclone needs modifications to get it to work and the Prizm Pro (manufacturer claims good to 300 gallons) is insufficient on anything larger than a 55.
 
You can bang on as much as you like about remoras, they're not available in the uk....

On the other hand cpr bakpaks are , pay about 135 quid, or you can always risk a prizm. Despite what everyone in the uS says they do skim, though they are fiddly and fussy. If you have more money Tunze make some great filtration systems and aqua medic some that are pretty good.
 
I'm glad you posted that.....I've been scouring the uk online shops for remoras and found them no where!!! Now I know why!!

(That's me feeling a fool for the day!!!)

i bought a Juwel aquarium a couple of months ago and think the lighting is insufficent for live plants. I found your post and was wondering how what you had recommended purchasing worked out. I have 2*20W bulbs right now and the link you posted would allow me to increase to 2*24W. Will that make much of a difference? I have reflectors on each bulb to increase efficiency
