I read some where that you can use some sort of powder meant for pickles or something instead of kalw. Does any one know about this and maybe elaborate?

A paste of pickling lime and ro water will also kill aptaisa. I put mine in an injector like the kind you use to give kids medicine.

You use it like regular kalkwasser.
Add 2 tsp/gallon of RO water, and drip into your tank using a dosing pump or something like the Kent Aquadose.
To improve your alkalinity and increase Ca solubility, add about 50 ml white vinegar to the RO water.
