Keep or Ditch?

Yes, I believe I saw the stealth models.

About the fish returns, do major petstores do those? There is a few local specialty stores I'll ask; but most don't have great quality fish for some reason. Ugh, 2 oscars in a 10 gallon..

IME, it is about 50-50 that do or don't. The local Petsmart does, on most fish. Often they keep fish in smaller tanks because they are dependent on selling them, mov'em in, mov'em out, and don't plan on long term care/housing.

Now that I'm paranoid, how long should I let the tank sit with water in it to see if it starts breaking? Or should It do it while It is filling it up? Just want to make sure I don't test it, bring it upstairs, fill it up and have it shatter during the night.

I don't think that it will shatter unless it is a terrarium only tank made with thinner glass. Otherwise you are just checking the seal of the joints and I would let it sit for an hour and then check for puddles or wetness around the joints. Do it on a hard surface and be careful to keep the area around it dry while you fill it up so that if you see water later you know where it came from.

Again, don't get ripped off. Stealth heaters should be under $20.

The smallest one (for a 10 gallon) was nearly 50 dollars, I'll definitly shop around. I guess shopping at big chain stores is better in this department. The place also had power filters for a minimum of 60 dollars. Other places had the same exact models for 1/2 or 1/3 as much.

I'll test the tank out tomorrow and post my results.

Also, anyone know a good site which has accurate diagrams of fish compatibility? I saw one that seemed nice, can't find it again though.

Trying to plan what I want in the tank.

If I do the live plant thing, how much will that cut into the cycling time? I can stand having some pretty plants for a while.

I had a titanium heater put out by wok called pro time. Please DO NOT GET THIS HEATER! I only had this heater for about 5 months and one night last month the heater malfuntioned and heated my discus tank to 110 degrees. Needless to say all the inhabitants except the pleco did not make it. The pleco is still fine and I do not understand how he is still O.K. I'm really surprised he does not seem to have tissue damage from the extreme heat. The heater was so hot that I could not touch it for at least an hour after unplugging it and ther were burn marks down the side of it. Now, I suppose this could happen to any heater but it is my understanding that there are problems with this heater. However, the company has not recalled it. Now, I am in the process of restocking this tank. Needless to say I am keeping a close watch on the temps. on all of my tanks. About the live plants-there should be no negative effects from the plants. It does not make the cycle longer and in some cases can help the cycle along. From my experience with live plants in my aquariums; it has always been a true benefit. The fish get more oxygen from the plants, the tank has little or no algae, and a tank filled with live plants looks totally natural and so cool. I hope this helps.

Be happy!

If you have some of the big chain stores near you, shop their on-line pricing, it is often well below the in store cost. Print out the page and take it into the store, I'll lay odds they will match the price. It has always worked for me and for others from what I have seen on here. If they don't have it they usually are willing to order it in.

I have found that most compatibility "charts" or listings are somewhat general. Too much left out such as breeding behaviour and how that changes things, size of tank and even more so the depth and filtration and aquascaping. And of course the most important, tank maintenance.

My best luck has been from talking to others and posting what I would like to do, giving as many details about your tank as possible. Everybody will be helpful, though you will always have the one or two that will say to disregard the mainstream and follow the exception to the guideline. Sometimes it just comes down to the genetics of the fish.

You should get good solid advice here and by the truely dedicated folks at
