Keeping 2 substrates separate?

I thought that maybe I could use a clear piece of something, not sure yet, but that could support all of the sand? Sort of like a base? If you know what I mean. Kind of like the ones that are made for ponds, but clear and it can't be made-to-fit.

It'll have to be some DIY thing.

Try bending strips of plexi over heat/flame to create curvature of separation rather than straight pieces.

Make sure not too burn plexi indoor as fumes are very toxic. Just apply enough heat to bend them to shapes you desire.

If you can empty the tank and dry, use silicone to secure to bottom and back/front. The visible ends of strips on the front glass can be camouflaged by using black silicone.

As far as top of plexi, you can apply silicone and stick black gravels on top along the strips. This can be done before siliconing strips to tank.
No matter how well you separate them, some fishes may stirred up substrates over the partitions but can be minimized by gravel siliconed on top of the strips.

Have fun.

In your sig it looks like you have fish that are going to move it around. That could be your problem. Which tank is it?

You can paint the filter tube the same color ,or similar, color as the background. Krylon Fusion is aquarium safe.

Thanks, I'll look into that Krylon Fusion.
This tank is the 35g, and I have a couple of threads that show you what changes have been made to it, sorry I'm a bit lazy to think straight off of the top of my head.

Thanks Cerianthus, I might give that a try if I can find the time and materials.
Very well detailed and a great idea

Glad to assist!

Although I have not done this types of diy partitions since late 70's/early 80's, You can even apply same method to create terraces in the tank.
Higher in the back and lower as moved towards front.

Visible part of plexi (high terrace to low ) can be beautifully and artistically camouflaged by siliconing bits of rocks on the plexi including top of plexi strips.

I diy water falls on indoor pond about 20 yrs ago. I used wire lathe to frame out 12' water falls. Applied mortar mix on to it and stacked slates as well. Even watermill was incorporated by using some of water from the falls, gently cascading down the slates into mill then to pond.
By planning, and actual trials, I learned lot more than just from reading.
And I have learned quite a bit from many failures as well.

btw, if desire temporary partitions, just prepare the strips with gravel on top and stick them right into substrates.
