Keeping ghost shrimp alive

Thats interesting about shrimp tolerating broad range of salinity.
Um... to answer your question dave, my angels' body is around quarter sized, the black one is tad bigger (not including fins). I sure do have hard water so I won't be dosing calicum or anything like that.
If I tried dosing with iodine, would it have any effect on my fish?
I really want to keep ghost shrimp in my tank! I loved having them. Now I only have 1. I haven't seen it molt yet or any evidence of it. :dive2:

Why not do amano shrimp? Ghost shrimp are bait. They die quickly. Amanos are larger, easier to see in the aquarium and mine have been alive for well over a year now. Plus you have the added benefit of them eating algae.

OO really? I don't know where to find amano shrimps. I wasn't sure if amano was another name for ghost. Theres bunch of names for shrimps lol. I haven't gotten that area worked out for myself. What if LFS do carry amano shrimps but clump them with ghost shrimps... how can I tell the difference? Maybe I can get lucky that way.
:thm:

Ammanos have more color, are a different shape and usually have somewhat of a strip down their back. A guy on aquabid.com sells 10 ammanos starting at $7.00 for the 10.

Kissofthegorami, you're sweet! I'll look at aquabid and see what they have.
So... amano and ghost defintely look different *crossed eyes* :D

My angels are the size of a large coaster, and they might chase the shrimp away if it swims by, but they never bother or hurt them. I've had them in there for months and months now. If I were you I'd buy more cheap ghost shrimp to make sure I knew what was killing them before buying more expensive shrimp.

Iodine at low levels (those usually dosed for shrimp in freshwater) doesn't seem to have any ill effects that I have heard of or know about. Most folks reccomend 2 drops per 5 gallons, the shrimp factory reccomends 1/4 teaspoon per 25 gallons. I dose 1/4 per 25gallons in heavily planted tanks with fish and snails and have seen no problems at all. My understanding is that when you buy ghost shrimp yu may get the brackish species and you may get the freshwater. The brackish ones tend not to reproduce as well if at all. Depending on what your needs or desires are, amonao's may be a better choice, I am growing very fond of my cherry shrimp but given their smaller size I would worry about them once your angels grow up.
