I want to give away my female guppies and just have 2 males (an adult and one that is 5-6 weeks old) in my 5.5G... but I've read that without females to distract them, male guppies can start to nip at each other's fins. Is this true? And if so, can I just keep 1 (are male guppies happy on their own)?
I have one male guppy in my 35 gallon and he is very happy. I would describe him as the most active and social fish in the tank. He's my favorite.
Not too long ago, I added 2 other males to the tank. The original male and one of the new guys swam together, but the 3rd fish seemed alienated. I lost both the new guys eventually and probably won't buy any more for that tank.
I have two male guppies, one fancy and one feeder (see sig) and they do fine. Allthough they're allways doing this dance, I think it's the feeder being a little desperate and trying to, well, you know.
they should be fine as a male-only tank. they may nip every once in a while, but it isnt anything to be worried about unless they start to kill eachother.
have not had any problems with male-only guppy tanks. they will chase after platy and molly females though if there are any around - especially the gold coloured ones
i had same male guppies together with two female platys (one gold and one blue) and 4 female mollies (one gold and the others black or white).
the order of preference was the female gold platy and when that died, the female gold molly
they are relentless, all of the male guppies (I had only 3, so it was not so bad) go after the one female
