keeping sand clean

I'll really have to keep that in mind... makes sense. I boiled some nicely weathered rocks from the beach with no ill effects, but I'll have to switch to baking and rinsing instead from now on!

After all being killed by an exploding rock would be so ignoble...

...people all saying "Wow, he must have been pretty bad off to be making rock soup..."

LOL so they blow up when you boil them, but not when you bake them? Interesting.

Anyone know where I can find rocks that won't blow up? I think I'd feel safer baking them then I would if I used bleach. I don't want to take the risk of killing all my fish because I didn't rinse all the bleach from the rocks... :thud:

If you are worried about bleach, just soak them in a whopping does of dechlorinator befor eputting them in the tank, bleach is just concentrated chlorine so the dechlor neutralizes it.

I agree with joylynn.

I use the bleach solution all the time and just add a 4X recommended dose of Aquasafe. No problems/ fatalities/disease problems yet!

Bleach evaporates. Rinsing is of course still a good idea.

The only thing unsafe (IME) when using bleach is an absorbant substance like driftwood.

So could I bleach it, rinse it, and then leave it outside for a day to let whatevers left evaporate? Or would putting it outside defeat the purpose of bleaching it?

I'm heading to Home Depot today to see what kind of sand they have and see if they have any cool rocks.

I say bleach it and then rinse it in the same bucket and apply a bunch of dechloniator. Wait about an hour and then it will be ready for the tank.

Good call on the driftwood graphic...way too porous for bleach.

So, I just got back from Home Depot with my 50 lbs of play sand. The guy that helped me actually knew a thing or two about keeping aquariums, so that was kind of refreshing. I'm sort of putting the cart infront of the donkey because I've bought my substrate before buying my tank lol. I think what I'm going to do is put some in my 10 gallon just to get a feel of caring for a tank with sand before I decide to do it in another larger tank.

Now I know this is off topic, but are kribensis cichlids considered a rare fish? I stopped by Petsmart on my way home to see if they had any and they hadn't even heard of themor yoyo loaches. They didn't even know that a kribensis was a fish lol.

No they aren't, Petsmart and Petco usually stick to the same fish at least in my area they do.
