Kerri Tetra (Inpaichthys kerri)

Does anyone have any experience with the Kerri tetra (Inpaichthys kerri)? Since moving my angel pair into their own tank I have some space in my 55G. I am thinking of increasing the rummy school to 12, and if I have space (and can find / keep them) getting 12 Kerri Tetras.

I searched on here and can find no information on them at all, the name only comes up during searches for tetra compatible with angels. Also, how difficult are they to find? and are they expensive compared to most other tetra?

And finally, would 2 schools of 12 tetra be too many in a 55G with 1 angel and 8 peppered cory cats?

A more common name is emperor tetra although most of the time that goes to Nematobrycon palmeri so it's more specifically known as the "blue emperor" tetra.

I find Nematobrycon palmeri in my LFS but it is hard to tell sometimes because the colors can be faded. Most likely your store will not carry them but that is only based on my own experience. Emperor tetras also will be more expensive than the staple tetras sold at stores.

As for stocking, it sounds a little cramped to me although I like to keep things on the light side. If you are running enough filtration and doing regular maintenance I see no major problems.

As for stocking I am fine with less numbers of the tetra, I would be happy with 7 rummys and 7 kerri tetra. Heck, if I could find decent enough stock of rummys I would be happy with 12 rummys and nothing else, I have crappy luck with rummys though. Not to mention I think the blue would look neat against the red of the rummys nose.

Kerri tetras are not difficult to keep at all but are difficult to find. These are also very expensive but not as nearly as the cardinals. They have been labeled as 'blue emperor tetras' due to their blue/purple flanks.

I would not consider a 55g full of 12 rummies and 12 kerris cramped. Add 15 each. Kerris do not grow beyond 4 cm and are distinguished by the presence of the adipose fin whereas the original emperor tetras (Nematobrycon palmeri) do not have it but are even larger by comparison. Once again, we are forgetting tetras hardly excrete the amount of wastes rivalling the cichlids and catfish.

Just as a warning, feed only sparingly. Kerris tend to grab foods more quickly and can deprive even the angelfish their share of foods.

I agree, load that tank with tetras and watch them play. But I dont know about angelfish being timid at feeding time, unless they are still dime to quarter size juvies.

Look up reviews of this place before you order from here. Their customer service is horrible, their shipping policies suck, and they generally really screw up orders and send low quality product.

Anyway, buy a few tetras at a time until you have 20 or so Rummynose and about the same number of Kerri. Tetras really like to be in bigger groups, and a nice big school or two looks awesome.

Thanks for the replies, I am still trying to debate what to go with. I think it will be another school of tetras and an increase in the rummys. May even go with lemon tetras........ not sure yet though, still getting used to have 3 tanks instead of 1.

i just wanted to say i run 2 aquarium stores in florida. and we get emporer tetras regularly, though they are not hardy, you have to have lower ph and good schools

theres a saying around here if you want a school of 18 neon tetras buy 36!
with emporer tetras certain folks say if you want 2...buy 100!

joking aside they are easy to keep, but tough to acclimate, its alot healthier to pick them up at a LFS than to ship em out, mainly due to ph shock, in the bag ph is usually really low

Low pH is a constant headache of mine when getting new fish!! I live in the country with well water that has a pH of at most 6.0 (I have not yet tested with anything that reads lower than 6.0) and anywhere I have bought fish from has water with a pH of usually around 7.2.

Acclimating is a long and slow process around here!! Not looking forward to moving house in a few weeks. Hopefully the water will be the same at the new place.

Buy 100 to get 2, thats worse than my ratio of rummy nose tetras, I think I have to buy 10 to get 4.

Your advice with neons and most wild caught Tetras is about right, lol. I went through 50 Rummys for the 24 I have in my 80gal.
