The other day I was at my lfs looking at powerheads... The guys there really dont know a lot about swt but they are cheaper than the other place in town... anyhows, there was this mom and daughter in there looking at the pretty fishes when Bang... "Look Mom Theres Nemo"... that was it she had to have it.... I overheard her talking to the salesperson and the Mom already had a left over 10 gallon tank from the goldfish that died... What else would she need she was asking... just salt replied the salesperson... hmmm... well I already got salt at the house she said... the salesperson replied , you cant use the kind of salt that you put on your food mam, you have to use this.... pointing to the bag of instant ocean.... i kept listening... The little girl was getting impatient because Nemo needed a home and she needed a Nemo.... The mom replies to the salesperson that she will take the Nemo .... The salesperson gladly dipped it out into a bag , tied it up and sent her on her merry way... no salt, no nothing... I guess a sale is a sale... No I didnt do anything or say anything, I mean the guy had already told her what she needed which obviously is the bare minimum... Have any of you ever witnessed anything like this ? If you are having a bad day just think if you were in a 10 gallon tank full of table salt.... yum yum... Poor Nemo

well, im sure that when the clownfish DIED shortly after being introduced to the tank, maybe mom realized that morton salt wasn't exactly what they had in the ocean.

why didn't you say something? she didn't even know how much of the wrong salt to put in.

I partly agree, with this last post but if they were only in special stores I would not have gotten this urge that I am keeping at bay while learning whats involved because I would love a few reef fish they are so bright and colorful. But I am truely aghast that a shop would do that. I just can not believe it. I have talked people into going to the LFS instead of petsmart and told them what they needed and how to set up a tank before. I just thoguth they needed to know of a place that would steer them right. I hope I did that too.

Well, my Petsmart has gotten better about that kind of stuff. They used to be awful - they had dead fish in the tanks, uneducated staff who didn't know much about the fish, etc.
but when PETCO moved in right next door, they knew they had to change their act or they would get beat out. BTY, where I'm at the Petsmart doesn't sell SW fish, but the Petco does.

the petsmart doesn't sell sw here either but they would sell you a tiger barb for the same tank as guppies, and we know tiger barbs would tear the guppies tails apart.
