My 10 y/o has a school project I hope you might could help on. She has to do a project on the Brazilian rainforest. I was wanting to incorporate some fish of the area. Could anybody tell me what are some of the aquaria fish found in the area lakes and rivers that I could tack on for visual effect? Looking for anything from cichalids to pacus to piranhas. You name the fish and I'll find the pictures. I know some cichlids are listed as South American etc. but where do they come from? The Amazon river, rain forest streams etc.
Just wanting to add some color and something the kids could relate to. Thanks!

Flipping through Rncyclopedia of tropical fish..

Dwarf cichlids, Red oscar cichlid, many types of catfish - ancistrus, some puffer fish, many types of cory catfish, checkerboard cichlid, farlowella catfish, rummy nose tetra, black neon tetra, lemon tetra, black phantom tetra, silver dollars, killifish, otos, cardinal tetra, neon tetra, guppies, pristela, angelfish, discus, penguin tetra, hatchet fish.

I've included all fish that said Brazil or Amazon, not knowing where the rainforest is exactly, so many rivers feed into the Amazon, I guess we would consdier it all rainforest.

I think it would be neat to look at some of the larger fish common to the Amazon river basin. Off the top of my head I would suggest the
1) Red Pacu
2) Redbelly Piranha
3) Silver Arowana
4) Arapaima (this one is especially unique, i believe it is one of the largest freshwater fish in existence, if not the largest)

All of those four species are kind of dull on the coloration, but I think that the kids would be interested in them for their large size and particularly agressive behavior. Pictures should be easy to find on the net if you are interested

Weasal here are my suggestions:

1. Let your child find their own pictures, it's their project not yours.

2. Make sure to focus on all sorts of animals. It's the rainforest, not just the lakes & rivers. There will be all sorts of monkeys, birds, fish, and probably reptiles and snakes. Take your kid to the library, I'm sure there will plenty of good rainforest info there.

You're right

there Cpt. Hook. It is her project and she is going to do it. She just asked me for assistance which I am giving. Fish is not going to be the only animal on the board, just the prettiest. I don't know what all she's gonna put on it 'cause like you said, it's her project. Besides, she's only 10 and isn't as computer saavy with the ability to find info. like you or I.

Sounds good. I think the brightest fish from that area would be the cardinal tetra, so a pic of that would look good. Also everyone is interested in piranhas so that's always a good choice.
