I have a small 2.5 or 3 gallon (not sure which) tank on my desk at work. This morning when I came in I saw that one of my glow lite Tetras had an eye missing. He was swimming around and looked okay to me. When i went to lunch around 12 I came back to find that he was missing. I was looking around the tank and low and behold my Apple snail was having him for a light snack. AHHH!!! Originally I had 4 in there and one Monday there was only 3 and I couldnt find him anywhere. So now I know what happened. Now there is only 2. Is that normal for a snail?

I wonder if this is what happened to my platy?!?!! (still haven't found the little bugger so someone had to have eaten him!!)

Ampullaria cuprina, the apple snail, will eat algae, plants, vegetables, fish food, frozen foods, and live foods. They are scavengers, and if something or  someone falls to bottom....chow time.

I have to agree, apples aren't fast enough to be carnivores, but they do scavenge. A lost eye on one of your fish sounds like a fish squabble. Small schooling fish can get pretty feisty with eachother, so just keep an eye out. It could've also been a disease that wasn's visible until it was too late for the fish.~Angela

There is no way a snail is fast enough to catch a healthy tetra. But once they succumb to illness, your fish is a tasty way to add protein to the snail's diet. Sorry to say it, but your tetra was probably injured by another fish, then died and the snail is cleaning up the aftereffects.

I guess that was it. He got in a fight and fell to the bottom. I just had no idea a snail could even eat something like that. He ate it in like 3 minutes!!!!

Snails are nothing if not efficient scavengers. Sorry for your loss though...

VERY efficient. I had seven SAE and two Mysteries in QT. One SAE lay on the bottom and the two snails had him gone - except for the bones -- in an hour.

No, he wasn't diseased. He got in a fight with a couple of the others and lost.

It probaly didn't kill the fish. The neon probaly had popeye and mabye dropsy. The snail probaly ate it after the fish was dead
