I'd still stick to my first guess that the critters are pods and just getting free feed of off the dead fish. If you had isopods you probably would have noticed they tend to get quite a bit bigger than copepods. It sounds like ich to me to do your fish have raised white bumps on their skins? It will look a bit like pimples and your fish will try to rub on any hard object. Did it start with one fish and then spread fairly quickly around your tank . Copepods are harmless snaks to your fish and really don't cause any issues ,"except for a shortage of them amongst some species of fish."
I'd encourage you to look up ich and see what you find. If it were isopods ,"most of them are harmless to," you'd most likely see them they are quite a bit larger than the copepods and most species tend to concentrate on the gills,eyes etc. Some species are small and will affect the fish in other areas but, I've never even heard of them in a tank," doesn't mean it can't happen".
