Well I think the best thing for you to do is decide whether you can immediately purchase a 40 gallon tank or larger.... if not, then I would return your fish to the LFS and get some fish more suitable to a 5.7 gallon tank. There are not many cichlids you could choose for such a small tank, though.
And remember in the future its always best to research the fish before you buy... I know how tempting it is to buy a fish you see in the store! (I am guilty of it in the past). But its best for the fish and you if you go home and research the fish first, then come back a day or two later to purchase it if you can meet it's requirements.
