As are false SAE's, which are very similar to SAE's as well. Their fins tend to have a yellowish tint to them and they have 2 sets of barbs instead of one. I have the false ones and they have to be kept separate or they spend all their time attacking each other. Of course mine lives with my cories and hangs out with them a lot, even when they were all in the 10 gallon tank. An odd fish but funny. They tend to swim quite jerky and generally like to hang out on the bottom or the sides of the tank nibbling away.

This little guy is the real trouble maker of the bunch,
The "false Siamese algae eater' (often offered as the 'colorful flying fox'), probably a Paracrossochilus species is far more common than the true SAE (C. siamensis), and much more attractive, much more like the flying fox. It's comparative characteristics: 1) The lateral body band is smooth, not zig-zagged in appearance, 2) This band does not extend beyond the base of the muscular caudal peduncle, 3) The dorsal surface is not cross-hatched in appearance, 4) Its fins are distinctly yellow-hued.
Three very helpful sites for ID'ing true SAE's and their most commonly mis'ID'd look alikes. Even some reputable aquaria/fish books have mis'ID'd the SAE with other species, this has made some fish-keepers swear up and down that they have a true SAE and everyone else is mistaken.

The yellow fins on the false guy are a dead give away. But they are nice and colourful and when there is nothing similar in the tank are a fun fish to watch. It is weird watching one sleep on top of a cory cat though.

This site does a nice job spelling out the characteristics of a true SAE, detailed high quality photos.

I always thought the jagged black stripe that continues through the tail was a solid giveaway but there are several.

They don't sound like SAEs to me. Mine were very mellow, never bothered anyone, lived with gouramis, rasbora, and loaches.

I have a flying fox and he doesnt bother any of the other fish in the tank...in fact I got rid of a black shark and a red tailed shark because they were picking on him. I really enjoy him because he has alot of character, and loves to sit on the bottom of the tank. He kinda looks like he runs instead of swims. lol.

CAE sold as SAE

I purchased a supposed SAE at one of my lfs; it was the only one in the tank that had "spots" along its black body line. Lo and behold, it murdered my big Shubunkin--nipped, then ate her fin within a day while I was at work. I researched and discovered that it was indeed a CAE!! Took it right back and got a snail--does a much better job, too. So sorry about all your fishes--I'd get it out immediately!!

Thats crazy.

Have you actually observed them harassing your fish?

Can you get it straight what was in your 55g, how many fish where in there?

A 7" Raphael, 3+ Gourami, 5+ tiger barbs, a 24K Pleco, a Royal Pleco, 4 leporinus Faciatius, an indertiminant ammount of Clown Loaches & a Ghost Knife... What else?

I bet your fish are dying from overcrowding problems and not the peaceful SAE. The Tiger Barbs, Gourami, Leporinus and Knife are all known killers.

Knife is out of the tank, my biggest raphiel was dead I believe I posted that 0 loach 2 raphiel 2 gourami only 5 tiger barbs and the 4 lepornius Faciatius so basicly in my 55 there is 11 fish, they are all smaller now, the biggest fish is the SAE or FSAE or CAE or whatever they are, the pictures Roan art posted shows the one that it is with the stripe through the body and yes I have posted that they heard all the fish into one side of the tank and wont let them leave, I am looking into trading them in, I dont want to as I dont agree on that practice but I cannot have my fish dead either
