Is this a good way? kinda seems like it would be a hard way to die? :(

I believe that the reason people often use the method is because many fish are already used to being cold. So, if it just gets colder than before, the fish either goes numb, or goes unconscious. There's a sticty at the top of this forum discrbing humane ways of doing this. I heard clove oil is also used, you may want to ask other members about that, it's suppose to cause them to peacfully fall asleep and of course they don't wake. There are also a few articles on this site about thi subject, and also many on other sites as well.
By the way, he method you are using is a bit traumatic, but if it works quickly, then I leave the choice of method to you. Good luck.

I normally use a sharp knife to sever the head from the body. Some folks have issues where they cannot do omething as, er, brutal I suppose. I grew up spending time on ranches and having to euthanize animals that got stuck in barbwire fences, hunting and fishing. Euthanizing an animal in this way doesn't bother me in the slightest. The freezing method would not be my first choice. If one needs the hands off approach I would suggest clove oil. Also, your method of striking the fish sharply against an object is perfectly responsible and reasonable. I used to kill my feeder rodents for my snakes that way if I could not find anyone with frozen mice in stock.

Not at all. If done properly blunt trauma to the head is a great way to render them dead in a very very quick manner. Superior to freezing, imho.

try your best to give them away first. unless its because of sickness.

I never kill my fish unless they are going to die! If i choose to change fish i just take them back to the pet store and donate them... :)
