Kitchen Sponge Catastrophe - Need Advice

Best wishes for the morning!!!!

Sorry about your loss. I'm sure this will help others (me) in the future though. Hopefully things are better in the morning.

What a tragedy - I'm so sorry.

I'm happy your GBR's are doing well. For some reason that's been my experience as well. Their reputation is that they're fragile, but my ram thrived when hardier fish didn't.

Good news. Didn't lose anyone over night. The gasping has mostly subsided. Don't know what it's done to the benficial bacteria yet.

Maybe the multiple water changes helped. Figured I didn't have much to lose. Not out of the woods yet, but hanging on.

I really hope this thread saves someone else from going through this. I guess they put that warning on the label for a reason. You can be sure I will be extra careful with ANYTHING that goes into the tank from now on!

glad to hear it sounds like you are heading out of the woods. Still have my fingers crossed for you and your fishy friends.

I've been on this forum for over a year now and I remember a post about using a kitchen sponge. It was a long time ago. As time goes by and posts pile up the older posts get buried.

So what's a person to do? Unfortunatly bad things can happen. Sometimes bad things happen even when using products specifically designed for aquarium use. In our efforts to provide a complete eco system for our wet friends we can only do the best we can with what we know. Your unfortunate occurance will no doubt help others to avoid a tragedy.

Good luck with the survivors.
