Knifefish

ok, since we are on the topic of it being "blind" how does he know if it is day or night?

After I pulled out his precious plastic plant, I tried the glass lamp trick, but he knew better. Inspected it awhile, cruised thru it, went around it, over it and said no dice. He does sense light and dark. I took it out, there was no fooling him. He made up his own mind, went over to my little lava rock decoration, that's in the shade of a sword plant, and staked his claim. Its right up against the aquarium glass so I can see him all the time, but he just doesn't know it.
And he's been there ever since. Yes, I realized I made an error re: the african brown knife, he's also cool. Its the african knife, that is an aggressive predator, I think.

Mine senses light changes, he is visually impaired, but does perceive light and dark. He's not shy under the aquarium light, I believe he is well accustomed to the layout of the aquarium, and is feeling secure. Also well fed, so he has no concerns about his next meal. They kind of swim by there food, using an electrical impulse to determine the size and proximity of food, the they reverse direction and snap it up. I've seen him open his mouth to grab a too big piece of shrimp that I dropped by mistake. He can open it up a fair size. He has goten used to tank noises, as when I open and close the hood. He'll sleep through a 50% water change, laying on his back all the while, while I fiddle all around him. If I pull out his lava rock house, I have to literally shake him out of it, even as I'm taking it out of the water.
After the water is replaced he'll do a swim through just to see if here were any changes in the tank. When I added my second filter, I had no sooner closed the lifd and there he was nosing all around it for a good 15 minutes or so, then he went back to bed.

This fish is a joy.

As swimfins says they can detect light changes as can many "blind" humans. They just have dificulty making out and differentiating objects from one another. and many colours will tend to blend into one big blob! Cats also suffer somewhat from this problem, their eyes are setup to work best at night and because of this they see slightly blurred in daylight compared to their ability to see at night. Most knifefish are nocturnal fish and thus have eyes setup much the same way as cats.
Hope this explanation helps.

Crazy, well I got the baby today!!!! he is about 2 inches and he found his place in the log right away! along with the clown loaches, they found there spot so well hidden that I can't find them! So right away I thought they jumped out, looked all around the tank to see if they did jump out, NO SIGN, then I couldn't find the BGK, and I found him in the smallest hole in the log you could possibly find, if it wasn't for the white tipped tail, I wouldn't have found him! still can't find the loaches! I also got put the giant danios in, and moonlight gourmais, those are really neat looking, and two silver dollars in, everything is/are babies!!! I think I need one more loach, I only have 2 right now, until I can find them
tell me if these are decent prices for the fish
12.99-bgk
11.99-clown loaches
4.99-Silver dollar
5.99 green servum
1.39 giant danios

do clown loaches have a rep. for jumping out?

Not in my experience but I wouldnt rule it out. I have seen my old clowns shoot up to the top of the tank quite fast, Maybe the only reason they didnt jump is they noticed the lid. They do definately have the power to jump out though.

It sounds good. Your tank should be covered though for peace of mind.

I paind 25 dollars for my BKG, but he was 4 inches and they had bigger but I took the smaller one because of my limited space.

Clown loaches are about 6 dollars each, 14 for the bigger ones.

Monitor your amonia and nitrites, and don't do a water change for a week or so, because of the bio-spira. Later change 25% unless its cloudy then do more.

Now the fun starts.......whoopie, post pics when ya can.

WHOO HOO!!!! The clowns finally came out!!! MY TANK IS SOOO COOL!!!! I love the pick I have! It is so active and fun to watch! The Green Severum is really dosile(sp?), he is like to cool for all the other fish slow moving, changes colours every once in awhile. The 2 loaches just swim back and forth and check the log out all the time, there is obviously enough hiding places in there for them, the silver dollars are funny, they just kinda look at each other as they swim across the tank, the moonlight gouramis constantly pace the tank, (is pacing onlly when you walk, ahh you get the point), and then the BGK, he is funny, everytime I try to peek at him, he has his head out a little bit, then I peek, and he backs up until I can't see him, I really like him, hasn't come out much, but ehh, I guess thats what you do when you are a new nocteral fish.

now I know what you guys mean by taking pictures of the fish! man!
