Knock knock?

Either case, the noise won't go away. They say pistol shrimps are really fun with gobies, but if you can't stand the click...

Now if your crab disappear, it is probably the "other" kind of shrimp.
In this clip, it chopped of the crab's claw and ate it right in front of him, d*mn bast***! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu6yrC6bjNo&NR=1

I don't think I can watch! I'm really thinking it was maybe my heater turning on and off....

I don't think I can watch. I really think it might have just been my heater turning on and off:headshake2:

The mantis shrimp is more of a traveler than the pistol is, but if u have a mantis, you'd probably see him. They're not shy and not afraid to come out. As to pistol shrimp, they tend to disappear. I put a pistol in my tank about a year ago, and I always hear the clicking, but have to this day, never seen him.

Maybe it's wishful thinking but...the sound doesn't sound like the sound of the mantis videos I (stupidly) watched and does sound much softer. It is also not omnipresent. I'm hoping either pistol and auditory hallucination. Or my heater.

Pistol and Mantis are very different sounding I think. Mantis you get the tap tap noises where as pistols you usually just get one LOUD snap every once and a while, sounds like your breaking a small tree branch. You can hear it several rooms away with the door closed it is that loud.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've had a clicking coming from my tank since I set it up. Clicking gets louder at feeding time. I have a feeling its a pistol shrimp

Yes, it could be your heater.....have you ever turned the lights off and just watched until you hear it to try and see where it is coming from? Like watch your heater and see it it turns on or off when you hear it?

Okay, I'm new here and I know NOTHING about sw tanks. Are you guys saying you could have things in your tank you didn't put in there purposely? I think this is the second thread I saw that people have found 'surprises' in their sw tanks. Some not so nice surprises. That is scary to me.

yes, eroomlorac. they're called "hitchikers." you get them in your tank when you buy live rock to put in the tank. there's tons of critters in the crevices of live rock, and they just come with the territory. i've gotten several feather dusters, snails, and other critters on the rock i've purchased. you really never know what's going to be on/in the rock. sometimes you get lucky (like coral polyps, snails, micro brittle stars, etc), and sometimes you get pests for free (like the mantis, asterina, among others). so buying a piece of LR is kind of like a grab bag, or as forrest gump would say "a piece of live rock is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get." hope this helps :)
