Hi! to everyone. I live in CT and I have a 120 gl tank at home, I have about 8 verouse non agresive fish in in the tank, and i also have 3 buterfly kois in there. I purchased the kois at Wallmart, but when I went to petco to posably purchase another koi for my tank, they told me that koi fish are ileagle to sell in CT becouse so many people dump them in the lake and they devestate the local fish population, so they don't sell them, I mentioned that Wallmart sells them. he told me that Wallmart is a big corperation and so they could aford the fines for selling those fish. Is it true that selling koi in CT is ileagle and are there any other states that have simaler laws.

Yes it is illegal for a person to introduce a non-native specie into the local environment. I don't know if Koi are illegal or not. I know there are Koi breeders who will sell Koi. I've seen them in a few LFS' + walmart.

What will you do with these beasts later?!!? I keep telling my husband we need a pond so I can get some fish like those!!

Koi fish are quite beutiful fish they have a very friendley persenality they will grow only as big as the envirement they are in, and when they outgrow my tank perheps i will build an outdoor pond for them. Kois they have a very enormas apitite they could even eat food out of your hand.

Koi wouldnt devastate the fish population. Most likely the koi would die if they were introduced into a river.

Rushdude, slow up an read.
joeski sed they going into a LAKE. not a river.
I bet they'd be happy as fish can be in a lake in CT.
as for devestating local fish... There is All kinds of trouble perfectly
nice non native plants or animals can cause.
sorry Joeski I dunno CT laws. JUst make sure you have plenty of room for those babies soyou don't have to worry about 'dumping' them anywhere.
Ct borders lots of other states, hsouldnt be a big problem, eh?

I don't subscribe to that school of thought. An adult fish that doesn't grow to near its full growth potential is either malnourished or stunted due to atrophying muscles, in either case it will not be a healthy fish.

I didn't say i would dump any fish in the lake, I said other people do that have no respect for thair lockal envirment, and yes Koi fish would do a lot of damge if released in a lake they are bottom feeders with a big apitite for other fish eggs.
