Koi in 75gal?

I'm a reef aquarist making a switch to FW... I have a 75gal wall mounted aquarium I'm setting up and would LOVE to have a beautiful koi in there. I realize this is not appropriate, or even feasable due to their quick growth. But what about butterfly koi? If I could keep just one I'd be happy. I'd appreciate any feedback on whether or not this is feasable or if I should go with cichlids or something else instead.

I couldn't tell you for sure, but I think any smaller fish would be happier. Maybe if you have a friend with a pond, build a pond yourself, or have a local fish store that would let you donate a fully grown koi you could raise some koi in there then move them. In my opinion a beautiful aquarium like yours should house a bio-type or community, but that is just my 0.02$. Let us know what you decide and maybe post some pics!
 
Short answer = no. I've kept smallish (under a foot) koi inside during the winter, but I wouldn't keep them in a tank permanantly.

What about some of the "fancy" goldfish? Some of those are quite impressive and would do great in a 75 gallon.
 
Agreed.


Butterfly koi are still koi, and should attain around 3 feet in length in a healthy enviroment. I would look into comet goldfish or perhaps a larger (12'' adult size) cichlid.
 
Is the aquarium already made? Can you build one instead or from that one?

The aquarium was a donation from a friend who had a 75g sitting around in the garage, and it's about to be installed in the wall.

A question about fancy goldfish... due to the fact that I'm lazy and hate vaccuuming gravel, I was going to have high current (1200-1500gph pump in the sump) with jets along the gravel... would this be detrimental to fancy goldfish since they're not very good swimmers?

Why not do a Bare bottom tank so all you have to do is siphon off the bottom?
