I inherited a koi pond when I moved 5 months ago. One of the smaller goldfish has her scales protruding and she looks like she swallowed a golf ball. I gather from another posting that this indicates dropsy. What do I do? None of the other six fish display any symptoms. I live in Southern California and we have been having warmer weather recently. Could this contribute? Thanks in advance.

I'd put this in the Ponds forum, but I am going to say that Gina Sandford, in her book, "Aquarium Owner's Guide," said that dropsy is not curable and euthanasia is the only option.
The only time I've seen dropsy go down ever was in a goldfish that we managed to keep alive for a few weeks, and even then it just slightly subsided (the swelling). It did end up dying. All of the other fish I've seen with it have died.

you could try that cure, worth a go. but youve really gotta think whether it is cruel to keep it alive during the process should it not work. i would go with euthanasia, sooner rather than later for the fishes sake. but it isnt contagous like childaug said, so dont worry there.
