Hi, does anyone know if one pair of kribs would be okay in my 10 gallon tank? It currently has 5 platy's one pleco and a goldfish which i think I'll be taking out for them.
Fancy goldies do just fine with temperature bracket of 74-76 degrees Fahrenheit. Actually, they prefer their water warmer than the pond types require. With fancies, I aim for 10-15g per fish. For pond types, I aim for 20g per fish. That does not mean a 20g or smaller is okay. A 30g itself can house two adult fancy goldfish whereas pond types do better in larger tanks in which case a 75g would be more efficient with better floorspace than a 55g although you have to realize with smaller tanks, maintenance becomes more tedious. I quarantine new goldies in my 10-15g tanks and the maintenance is more frequent than would be necessary. Also, the pleco should definitely not be in a 10g. I'm guessing it's a common pleco, which get over 18 inches and need at least 125g! Goldfish also need bigger tanks, and they need colder water. Goldfish should never be kept with tropical fish like plecos and kribs. Goldfish need at least 40 gallons for the fancy kind (fantails and such with the rounded bodies and slow moving) while the regular ones with streamlined bodies need at least 55g each.
Bazil, if you read my post, I never said a 15g by itself is feasible. I already clarified that in my previous post. I was referring to large tanks and calculating as a guideline how many goldfish may fit in a particular tank rather than a small tank by itself which is not feasible. And where in my post did I say to mix them with tropicals? There are very few plecos that can conform with goldfish just fine as long as they do not act aggressively. Most plecos can handle temperature that goldfish do without them trying to suck the slime coat of the goldies.IHMO, fancies really need more than 15g each. Many can get up to 8" or more, and I just don't see how they could be happy in a 15g tank. Even so, they need pretty good filtration, especially if you did go smaller than 30g.
It's true that fancies can do well in water that is a little warmer than which is normally recommended for pond types, but I still would not mix goldies with tropicals. IMHO, goldies should only be mixed with other similar-sized and similar-shaped goldies.
