Hi everyone...

I currently came across a Kuhli Loach and Bichir from a friend who was going to flush them because she no longer wanted a fish tank (horrible, I know).. I quickly told her I would take them and I am going over there today when she gets off work to get them. Does anyone have any helpful information they could give me about them? I was planning on putting them in my 75 gallon(the fish that are in it are on my signature) or if maybe one of my other tanks would be better suited for them? Anyone who could shed any light on these 2 poor little beings, please let me know!

Thanks so much!
Julie

Do you know how big the Bichir is? I'm assuming since she was going to flush it, that it isn't too big. Bichirs will eat anything that can fit in their mouths, so if its a good size fish, your tetras and danios may not be safe. If its still small, you should be fine I think.

Others will be able to provide more info, as I've never kept Bichirs.

The Kuhli loach should be fine. You may want to get a few more, as they are social.

The khuli is about the most peaceful fish you could come across. I agree he'd probably be happier with some more loaches (I actually have 2 black khulis, 2 black/orange striped khulis and 1 dojo loach and they're all friends).

Because the bichir will eat anything smaller then itself, maybe consider taking it to a LFS?

What do your Kuhlis eat?

I'm guessing you have a Polypterus senegalus senegalus which will max out at roughly 10-12 inches when fully grown.
in the 75gallon the barbs, mollies and kuhli loach could wind up as dinner for a bichir.-Anne

those barbs are pretty safe. I kept a senegal with a school of barbs briefly. Senegals are slow and awkward swimmers and tiger barbs are much faster and decidedly more agressive. He also never had a problem with the two dojos he had with him. If you're going to keep the senegal I'd recommend giving him as much variety in his diet as possible.

keep in mind this is not to say the senegal isn't dangerous, it will eat anything that can fit in it's mouth but it won't bother anything bigger
