I prob shouldn't ask this question, but, is there any way that Kuhli Loaches can be kept without adding sand? I have a small pebble bottom and do not want to add sand.

I have been to 3 LFS today looking for Khulii but lo and behold, none available. They say try next week.
I think the sand is important to most of the digging fishies. Its more natural to them and I think they'll be healthier if you try to mimic the biotope of any fish (except the hardy who can adapt to a certain degree).
You can clear an area and add about 3 inches of aquarium sand to form a mound or drifts, and it should work. (I think) Its what I'd do but better to ask someone who knows like Orion girl.

I find that sand will not stay in place when added to a graveled tank, it just slips down below the gravel. In spite of this, I added a bed of sand under the driftwood stump where the 5 kuhlie loaches stay. I guess they like it, I see them out every few weeks or so. Once in a while I still count all 5 out at once.

I have fine gravel and 14 khuli loaches between my tanks. They burrow in the gravel just fine, and live in the roots of plants and in the small caves I have constructed for them. I see them quite often in the one tank, not so often in the other, but I caught sight of a very plump one the other day, so I can only assume they are happy and very well fed.

Well, sounds like they are adaptable! Cool. Now if only I can find some. (I think that If I was a burrowing fish though, I think I'd prefer a nice sandy bed. But thats just me. )

Hi bozco, what size is your gravel?
I was thing about making a "sand" swimming pool underneath a piece of wood too. I wonder if I can put some sand in a hollow container to keep it together? and hide the plastic with the gravel?
