MY YELLOW LABS DIE ONE BY ONE IN MY TANK.
THEY STOPPED EATING ABOUT A WEEK AGO AND ONLY THE LARGE ONES ARE SURVIVING NOW. I CHECKED THE TEMPERATURE 24-25 DEG CELSIUS, TWO 50% WATER CHANGES IN the last WEEK, FILTER MEDIA CLEANED.
NOTICED ONLY THAT FISH DOES NOT EAT AND BREATHING QUITE HEAVILY, SMALL FRY REMOVED, BUT DIED ON IT'S SIDE UNABLE TO SWIM.... NO OTHER VISUAL SYMPTOMS NOTICABLE, EVEN THE COLOR REMAINS MORE LESS THE SAME//// thanks for advice

For starters, don't use all CAPS! That's considered to be shouting, and is rude.

What are your water readings? Without those, I don't think you're going to get a very helpful response.

When you cleaned your media, did you accidentally get soap or something else on it? You may have contaminated the tank, leading to the deaths.

What do you feed your fish? Do you know they are mostly vegetarian and high levels of protien will kill them?

When you cleaned your filter, did you rinse it out in old tank water or chlorinated tap water? (If it was tap water, then you killed off all your beneficial bacteria).

How long has the tank been set up, and did you cycle it?

I feed mostly with flake food "tetramins", and sometimes flaked shrims. I do not feed them with any bloodwarms etc. I have them in a tank since January 2006, had no problem before, changing water 20-40% every week. I will have to do some water testing, even though I have never spent too much money on these chemicals>>water change and keeping aquarium clean helped me to avoid similar issues until now????
THANK YOU DIANA FROM VANCOUVER FOR HER RESPONSE....AND CAPITAL LETTERS ARE NOT HERE TO 'SHOUT' BUT TO HELP THOSE, WHOSE VISION IS NOT 20/20....

Since you seem to be doing a good job keeping the tank clean, and are not feeding a lot (even though I would feed better foods with more vegetable matter) then we can begin to narrow down the problem.

Something else it could be, which malawis are prone to, is internal parasites or hexamita. This is very difficult to ID if you dont know what to look for, since the fish dont really display many obvious symptoms.

Not eating is a clear indicator of it. Are thier bellies slightly sunken in, and are they doing spitting motions with thier mouths? Also, have you examined thier feces? If the feces is white and stringy then we can be sure its internal parasites.

To treat this, dose the tank with metranidazol. From what I remember its 1 tablet per 10 gallons, but check this out before dosing just to be sure. You can also try and soak some food in it, but if they are not eating then that probebly wont work.

The thing about internal parasites is once you have an outbreak it can sweep rapidly through your tank, causing you to loose fish faster then you can treat them.
