I just got a 2kg bag of peat granules made by Laguna. Would someone be able to tell me the amount of the peat for my 70G (South American biotope)? It says on the packaging that it would be able to treat 1800 US Gallons for up to 8 weeks. Would that mean that I should put 3.9% (~4% or ~1/25) of the whole contents of the bag?

Also it says that it will gently lower the pH and the water hardness levels. Does that mean that I would be able to add the peat without any issues such as, a quick decrease in the pH of the water?

I don't mind the amber colour that the water will acquire :)

i havent had esperience with this product, but I can confirm that there wont be any pH issues because the lowering process is fairly slow.

What do the directions say "treat" will do? Treat for up to 8 weeks is very vague. Does it give a specific pH reduction factor? The simplest calculation is what percentage of 1800 is 70 and use that portion of the 2kg bag. If it says it will reduce the pH by 1.0 and you only want it reduced by .75 then of course only use 75% of the portion.

I'm interested in this product, so let me know how it works for you.

I decided to take an approach of measuring by 1/8 cups. It took me about 150-1/8 cups to take all of the contents of the bag out. 1800 gallons is about 25 times bigger than 70 gallons, therefore, the treatment should be 4% of the whole bag. Therefore, it would take 6/8 cup or 3/4 cup. I just rounded off to 1/8 of a cup for each 10 gallons of water...

As for the procedure on the bag, it just says that I put the mesh bag containing the peat in an area where there is constant water flow.

It just seems to little to make a difference, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I'm currently testing it on a 20G high with AC 30 (1/4 cup of peat on top of a foam insert).

If it works, the tank water will be amber and I'll be able to acquire a lower pH.
