i am thinking of making a large display unit for my room. just wondering if anyone have made any.

like a multiple tank stand, like in pet stores

Yep. Can be as simple as concrete blocks and 2x4s or as complicated as you want. Try a google search for DIY aquarium stands.

like this, 20 gal long on the outside, and two 55's in the middle

I have something similar minus the 55's. Just 6 24" tanks. Plans are in my blog. Doing something like you are talking about would be difficult to say the least. You are talking over 2300lbs likely, all on a platform 12" wide. It would be rather top heavy as well. If it was sitting on level concrete, you could get away with it if you anchored it to the wall. The clearance above each tank wouldn't be great, but you could get used to it.

well its going to be 10'4" long and have a 15" footprint. i plan on leaning it back slight so there wont be a chance of falling over plus it would be light 2500lb with everything, the clearance between the two tank will be around 10"-7"
for each i may go lower just enough to take filter media put, i would rather the top 3 tanks and bottom 3 tanks be level with each other

These are the plans for my 6 tank rack. I actually already built it with a few modifications but dont have a working camera. I choose this style because it is rather strong. Looks weren't as important but it could easily be faced with something and trimmed out. If i was doing it for show I would have turned the 2x4 and notched them out. You may be more inclined to use 4x4s with the 55s.... Mine is nothing fancy but rather functional. I wouldn't want much less clearance on the tanks, however. Ill get you some pics if i can borrow a camera
